Guv Seeks CII’s Expertise on Generating Electricity from Garbage

Chandigarh March 6, 2021:- I am grateful to CII as it gives new ideas and thoughts to make Chandigarh competitive said H.E. V P Singh Badnore, Hon'ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator of UT Chandigarh during CII Chandigarh Business Conclave held at CII Northern Region Headquarters. The Governor also stated  he would also like to compliment CII for its advocacy for private sector's role in Covid vaccination and requested of CII help and expertise on generating electricity from garbage collected in the Region.

While speaking at the Session on 'Greater Chandigarh Region – Sharing Growth, Sharing Future' J M Balamurugan, Principal Secretary to Governor of Punjab, said, for Greater Chandigarh Region, our focus should be on non-polluting industries as many CoEs are based in the Tricity.

Nikhil Sawhney, Chairman, CII Northern Region, said that Chandigarh should be looked as Greater Chandigarh Region, i.e., incorporating all the bordering districts while preparing any futuristic plan in consultation with Government of Punjab and Haryana.  This will certainly help in achieving the goal of USD 15 billion or may be over passing it. There is an NCR Planning Board under Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in Government of India that work towards planning and development of NCR cities, similarly, there is a need to have a Greater Chandigarh Planning Board.

Dr SPS Grewal, Immediate Past Chairman, CII Chandigarh, said that the economy of the Chandigarh and its adjoining cities is interdependent as the area is continuously inhabited, though falling under different states. There is lot of movement of people and goods daily to and from suburbs. For holistic development of Chandigarh and surrounding areas, there is a need for coordination amongst the constituent states and the UT of Chandigarh. Thus, it is suggested for constitution of Regional Planning Board for Greater Chandigarh Region in line with NCR Planning Board. The primary objective of the Board may be to harmonize and improve facilities across the region and coordination with local administrations.

Dr Omkar Rai, Director General - Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), said that many Startups from Chandigarh Region had made big in the starup industry which is actively supported by agnel network. STPi's Neuron Centre in Chandigarh is promoting innovation in technology startup space.
