Chandigarh Dec. 03, 2020:- Shiromani Akali Dal (Democratic) president and Rajya Sabha MP S. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa on Thursday announced that he would be returning his Padma Bhushan award in protest against anti-farmers agricultural laws. S. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa was presented the Padma Bhushan - third highest civilian award, by President of India Ram Nath Kovind in March 2019 for his contribution in the field of public affairs.
In a statement, S. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa said that he was withdrawing the award in protest as farmers had been struggling and staging dharnas for the past two months but the Central government was not ready to listen to them. He said they expected that the centre government would resolve the issues of the farmers and satisfy them, but the situation is different.
S. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, said that whatever is happening with the farmers currently at the borders is intolerable. When the government is ignoring our mothers, daughters, sisters, elderly people and youngsters, who have shifted to Delhi borders for protest, then the award is worthless to me. Government should again think and satisfy the farmers by repealing such laws. He added that the party stands shoulder to shoulder with the farmers in every struggle and assists their agitation till the agricultural laws are repealed.
