Chandigarh 04th August:- The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research will be holding its 1st convocation for National Institute of Nursing Education (NINE) on Saturday, 6th Aug 2016. Honorable Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India and President of the Institute, Jagat Prakash Nadda will be the Chief Guest on this occasion. More than 500 candidates will be awarded degrees as well as 8 medals each of silver and bronze to the outstanding undergraduate candidates and certificates of distinction to the Post-graduates. Previous convocations were held under the aegis of Panjab University, last of which was in 2007.
The Nursing Institute was founded in 1964 as College of Nursing due to the foresight and concerted effort by Late Pratap Singh Kairon, the then Chief Minister and other distinguished medical educationists of Punjab State as a part of PGI and was affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh. Since then, College of Nursing had been contributing to the quality preparation of clinical nurse practitioners, educators, nurse administrators and researchers to provide preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative services to the sick or well. During the 8th five year plan the college of nursing was upgraded to National Institute of Nursing Education on 28th March, 2003 and was inaugurated by Sushma Swaraj, the then Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare. This has been the premier Institute in North India to meet the human resource needs with regard to nurses.
NINE was taken over by PGI in 2009 by the act of Parliament, and presently runs three courses in Nursing i.e. B.Sc. Nursing (4 years), B.Sc. Nursing (Post Basic) and M.Sc. Nursing as well as Ph.D. in Nursing. It reflects the vision of its pioneers who emphasized the need for developing self sufficiency in manpower development for hospital in all nursing specialties and super-specialties for India and abroad including training of nursing teachers, administrators and researchers to meet global requirement. NINE faculties have strived hard to achieve the objective to provide high quality comprehensive patient care through nursing students and engage in good quality research.
