By 121 News

Chandigarh 04th June:- Taking forward their mandate to promote awareness about Organ Donation, ROTTO PGI in collaboration with Shri Shiv Kanwar Mahasangh Charitable Trust organised an awareness session alongside blood donation camp at the Staff Training College, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Panchkula  where  90 people  pledged their organs and 31 donated blood.

To mark the successful completion of training of a batch of 87 trainees, the camp was inaugurated by M.M. Dhupar, General Manager, Regional Office, Oriental Bank of Commerce, Chandigarh. Other dignitaries present on the occasion included Rakesh Sangar, President, Shri Shiv Kanwar Mahasangh Charitable Trust P. K. Behl, Principal Staff Training College, Oriental Bank of Commerce.   Ms Simmi B Sumbria and Ms Nilakshi, Transplant Coordinators from Regional Organ & Tissue Transplant Organisation (ROTTO) PGI counseled the people about the cause of Organ Donation.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms Simmi B Sumbria said that it's not that there aren't enough organs to transplant. Nearly every person who dies naturally, or in an accident, is a potential organ donor. Even so, innumerable patients cannot find a donor. Therefore, the public education is critical to bridge the gap between patients who need organs and potential organ donors.

Answering the queries on the myths and misconceptions on the subject, Ms Nilakshi highlighted that one person can save the life of about 8-10 persons; therefore organ donation is considered to be a true 'Gift of Life'. There is a positive change as people are coming forward but we have a long way to go. So every one's effort matters.

While enumerating the activities of the Shri Shiv Kanwar Mahasangh Charitable Trust,  Rakesh Sangar shared that community service has been the core agenda of the Trust and there cannot be better service than giving someone a fresh lease of life through blood donation or organ donation.

P.K. Behl set the tone of the event and said that encouraging community participation to promote noble causes like blood and organ donation is a commendable initiative. We all must join hands and synergies to make the National Programme on Organ Donation a success.

The blood and organ donation camp witnessed very enthusiastic response with many Oriental Bank employees contributing to the cause. 90 people pledged their organs and 31 units of blood collected during the camp.
