Chandigarh 07th May:- The prevalence of obesity among adolescents has grown from 16 % to 29 % over the last 5-yr. More than 15 million children are estimated to be overweight in India. Gestational diabetes, a condition wherein diabetes is recognised for the first time during pregnancy has increased by 15% in the past 5-yr. Morbid obesity is affecting more than 5%-6% of the population today."
This was stated by Padma Shri and renowned bariatric surgeon of India, Dr. Pradeep Chowbey while delivering an awareness talk on 'advances in the treatment of diabetes and obesity' at IMA complex, Sector 35 here today .
Dr. Pradeep Chowbey who is at present a Chairman of Max Institute of Minimal Access, Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and Executive Vice-Chairman, Max Healthcare further said that the symptoms of approximately 80-90% of the patients who are diabetic or at the tipping point of diabetes have been triggered due to the problem of obesity. While diabetes alone may not be completely treatable, 'diabesity' or diabetes associated with obesity can be treated.
Talking about the growing epidemic of 'diabesity' and the urgent issue of 'obesity', Dr. Chowbey said that bariatric surgery is not a shortcut to weight loss but a treatment for obesity-related diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, high cholesterol and sleep disorders, among others.
Dr. Pradeep Chowbey said that Patients with BMI over 32.5kg/m2 combined with type 2 diabetes should be recommended bariatric surgery or surgery for morbid obesity as an early intervention. If conventional treatment fails to control diabetes and their attempts at losing weight fail, they should seek surgical options. Bariatric surgery is a life-saving surgery and should not be confused with liposuction which is a cosmetic procedure.
