Chandigarh 06th April:- Every year around 5.8 million Indians die from non- communicable diseases. Cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diseases and chronic respiratory disease cause 55% of total deaths in the age group of 30- 69 years; this represents the economically productive segment of the population. These diseases now affect younger and younger people. The greatest risk factors contributing to NCDs are unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco,alcohol and air pollution. The good news is that the majority of illnesses and deaths due to NCDs can be delayed or avoided by preventing and controlling the risk behavior.
The theme for this year's World Health Day is Diabetes and the slogan adopted is "Beat diabetes: Scale up prevention, strengthen care and enhance surveillance."School of Public Health, PGI, Chandigarh in collaboration with Meher Baba Charitable Trust, Bassi Pathana organized a screening and check- up camp along with interactive sessions with the community members about prevention and control of diabetes.
The timing of the program was from 7:30a.m. to 11:00a.m. In an primary school in village Ballara. The chief guest was David Lelliott, Deputy High Commissioner, Great Britain along with his wife Mrs. Lizeth Lelliott and Mrs. Tanisha Thiara, Head, British Council of India. The gathering comprised of a mixed crowd i.e. the school children, who were briefed about the day celebration and adult population, were screened blood sugar, BP and Hb by trained technicians in the field. After which the team from PGI, Chandigarh namely, Dr. Tarundeep Singh and Gopal Singh Jat did check- up of the community members whereas Dr. Manmeet, interacted with the school children and Dr. Nimran Kaur and Ms. Arvinder Kaur Arora counseled the NCD patients.
