PGI organizes DHR Workkshop on E-waste Management in India:Issues and Challenges

Chandigarh 19th March:- DHR workshop on "E-waste Management in India: Issues and Challenges" concluded today at School of Public Health, PGI, Chandigarh. The focussing of the workshop was to generate knowledge and awareness about the emerging threat of E-waste, which is expected to grow very rapidly in India. The training programme was jointly organized by Department of Environment Studies, Panjab University and School of Public Health, PGIMER, Chandigarh.

Dr. Suman Mor, Assistant Professor, Department of Environment Studies, Panjab University and Dr. Ravindra Khaiwal, Associate Professor of Environment Health, School of Public Health, PGI coordinated the DHR training programme to bring together the academicians, corporate sector, community and other stakeholders to identify the sustainable solutions to tackle the emerging problem of e-waste.

BirendraChoudhary, IFS, Member Secretary, Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) chaired the valedictory session and inaugurated the scientific report of PGI funded collaborative project on "Appraisal and Awareness of E-waste Management Practices in Chandigarh". He appreciated the sincere efforts of School of Public Health, PGIMER and Department of Environment Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh to initiate awareness on E-waste and generating first scientific report on e-waste for Chandigarh to make enhance the compliance of new MSW management rules. He also mentioned that Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) in future will engage community and residents of Chandigarh to enhance collection of e-waste and will ensure safe and eco-friendly disposal of E-waste. Under the initiatives of Punjab University, Swachhta pledge was also taken by the participants under the guidance of Sh. Birendra Choudhary, IFS to keep the city clean, green and healthy.

Dr. Ravindra Khaiwal, Associate Professor of Environment Health, School of Public Health, PGI encourage the participants to focus on cost-effective and innovative technologies to ensure eco-friendly recycling of various components of e-waste to reduce the burden on environment. He further talked about youth empowerment to shift recycling of E-waste from informal to formal sector to take care environment and public health concerns.

Dr. Suman Mor, Assistant Professor, Department of Environment Studies, Punjab University highlighted the need of reduction at source and enhance the practices of 'Reduce-Reuse-Recycle'. Further, she stressed to create awareness and development of their skills about occupational hazards in waste workers.

Experts from various renowned institutes like Central University of Himachal Pradesh, Dharamshala; SRM University, Chennai; PEC University, PGI; Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee; Pollution Control Boards of Haryana and Punjab; Punjab University contributed to various sessions such as Classification, Public Awareness and Regulatory Framework,  e-waste management practices followed in Chandigarh, Haryana and Punjab, Health Impacts of e-waste, Informal sector recycling and health implications, Green sustainable technologies and Public private partnership for e-waste management. During the workshop special emphasis was given on community mobilization and youth empowerment to spread awareness on e-waste, their hazards and available options for safe disposal of e-waste.

The workshop was financially supported by PGI, Department of Health Research (DHR), MoHFW, New Delhi and Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB), Patiala to enhance awareness, collection of e-waste and to device sustainable way out for green recycling and safe disposal.
