Training of Nodal Teachers on Adolescence Education Programme

Chandigarh 18th January:- Adolescent aged 10-19 represents 20% of the world's population.  There are over 243 million adolescents in the world.  Important reason for adolescent education is because of the fact that over 31% of AIDS burden in India is among 15-29 years old.  The Adolescence Education Programme is not sex education for school children but is a programme which will benefit not only the adolescents but also the parents who will have a better understanding, all needs and concerns of their child as well as will provide the teachers and educators a structured content to talk more easily on adolescents reproductive and sexual health. 

To address this issue AEP programme is being implemented in all Schools of Chandigarh. AEP programme is designed to teach the awareness topic of Life skills Education, HIV/AIDS and other health and hygiene related issues to students of class 9th and 11th. It is a total 16 hours programme to be covered in an academic year which is being implemented since 2009 in all Schools of Chandigarh.

To have a review of the implementation of the AEP Programme, an advocacy cum refresher training workshop is being organized by Chandigarh State AIDS Control Society, UT, Chandigarh in collaboration with School Education Department, U.T. Chandigarh.  This is a 4 days workshop which was inaugurated today i.e. 18th February, 2016 at GMSH 16, Chandigarh. The refresher training cum workshop was inaugurated by Mr. Chanchal Singh, District Education Officer, U.T.,Chandigarh.

Dr. Jitender Dahiya, Dr. Dazy Zaraby, Mrs. Anoopreet Kaur, Mrs. Gurjeet Kaur, & Parmod Kumar were the resource persons for the workshop. On the first day 60 teachers were trained. The topics which were covered were Background & Basic knowledge of HIV/AIDS, Process of growing up during Adolescence, physiological, Mental & Emotional Changes, Adolescent reproductive & sexual health, exploring life skills: co curricular activities for life skill activities, Adolescence and sexuality: Gender and Gender Role, sex abuse, awareness building and sensitization, anger management, peaceful solutions for conflict resolution substance abuse, problem & challenges, relationship with other high risk behaviour.
