Chandigarh 18th October:- Over 200 people from tricity joined the walkathon, which was held at Sukhna Lake to mark the World Osteoporosis Day here this morning. The event was organised by Trinity Hospital and Medical Research Institute, in collaboration with Trinity Hospital, Zirakpur, Endocrinology Department, PGI and Yuvsatta, an NGO. People from all walks of life and from all age groups joined the campaign based on the theme "Serve up Bone Strength"
The event started with a welcome address of Dr. Mohinder Kaushal, Director, Trinity Hospital, Zirkapur followed by fun activity- Zumba Fitness dance exercise. Vijay Kumar Dev, Advisor to UT Administrator was the Chief Guest for the event. He flagged off the Walkathon which culminated at Buddha Garden wherein treasure hunt was organised followed by tug of war and stretching exercises.
While speaking on the occasion the Adviser congratulated the team of the hospital for conducting such activity to sensitize the masses. He said people need to take their health seriously and physical activity should be essential part of everyone daily routine and urged everyone to take a proactive approach towards maintaining a healthy life style.
Dr. Kaushal, while addressing the gathering, stressed on the need of balanced diet and active life style which optimises bone health at all ages and reduces the risk of osteoporosis. If anybody has the history of fractures or any patient who is on steroids or the patients suffering from diabetes, thyroid, intestinal disease or the post-menopausal women should get their bone density test or DEXA scan done periodically.
He said the aim is to create awareness how to minimise osteoporotic fractures, children should have maximum bone mass by age of 25, adults should maintain it and senior citizens to sustain it at later stages.
Dr. Kamla Kaushal, Head, Medical Superintendent Trinity Hospital and Aruna Bhardwaj, Adviser, Trinity Hospital and Director Principal, Alliance International School, Banur also spoke on the occasion. Others prominent who were present included, Dr. Anil Bhansali, Professor and Head, Endocrinology Department PGI, Dr. Sanjay Badada Additional Professor, Department of Endocrinology, PGI.
Members of Senior Citizens Association, Zirakpur, teachers and students of Alliance International School, Banur participated in the Walkathon. In its endeavour to uplift and motivate girl children, Trinity Education and Research Foundation felicitated 5 national girl players from Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, on this occasion. Dr. Anil Bhansali also stressed upon the physical activity, sedentary lifestyle is the root cause of all kinds of hormonal imbalance and weak bones.
