Ludhiana14th October:- While none of us is perfect, the desire to look perfect is universal. Flawless skin and perfect facial features are no longer limited to just celebrities and the elite. With Indians becoming increasingly conscious about their appearance, cosmetic procedures are at an all-time high in the country. The growing middle class no more shies away from getting under the knife, and the universal desire to look good can now be fulfilled by a simple nip here and a tuck there.
Owing to changing perspectives of people and growing demand, cosmetology has developed and the sector has developed into a full-fledged industry that has witnessed accelerated growth. Once labeled as a 'high class hangover' in tier 1 cities, cosmetic surgery has reached the middle class in cities such as Sirsa too. Reasons for this sudden boom, vary from easy access to technology, availability of affordable options, less time consuming and minimal post-operative care.
Dr Pankaj Mehta, Consultant, Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery at Apollo Cosmetic Clinics, part of Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals Delhi has been regularly conducting OPDs in the city for patients. In the last 4 months alone, the patients from Sirsa has crossed over 100 cases for treatments in various areas including gynecomastia (commonly known as male breast reduction), hair transplants, laser treatments and liposuction to name a few.
In the city to conduct his OPDs and interact with patients, Dr Pankaj Mehta, Consultant, Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery, Apollo Cosmetic Clinics, New Delhi, said, "Cosmetic procedures are rapidly gaining popularity in Sirsa due to increasing consumer awareness and technological advances in surgical and non-surgical procedures. The age profile of patients coming for various cosmetic surgeries is also falling. Usually, men and women in their late 40s were the major customers of cosmetic surgery, but nowadays, many younger people are approaching us for cosmetic/ aesthetic surgeons for facial corrections. The ratio of women and men is 60:40 and procedures range from laser hair removal to scar revision to Face lift through Ultherapy to gynaecomastia (male breast reduction) to breast reduction or breast augmentation (in girls)".
According to a global survey by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, India ranks among the top five nations for cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures.Studies have shown that cosmetic deformities have a deep impact on a person's psychology, which is evident in their refusal to participate in public events and in some cases; they even suffer from severe lack of confidence. A growing consciousness of looks is a major contributor to the widening horizon of these surgeries from metros cities to the entire nation.
Cosmetic treatments are offered through two different categories of invasive (surgical) or non-invasive (non-surgical) procedures. Invasive procedures involve radical measures taken to alter the appearance of a patient. Some of the most sought after cosmetic surgical procedures are breast enlargement, rhinoplasty (nose surgery), surgical face-lifts, tummy tucks, and liposuction.
Minimally invasive procedures have overtaken surgical procedures due to lower cost, shorter duration and lesser recovery time associated with the former. Some of the main non-surgical cosmetic procedures are non-surgical face lifts, Botox treatment, derma fillers, Ultherapy, Cool sculpting, abdominoplasties (tummy tuck), body contouring (Coolsculpting) and Hair Transplant.
Even as the demand for cosmetic correction increases, and the age limit of patients goes down, counseling before a session remains utmost important. Getting under the knife should be a conscious and mature decision. As new aesthetic surgery technology and products get introduced in India and popular surgeries become safe and affordable, small towns will no more remain far behind than metros.
Apollo Cosmetic Clinics, part of Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, New Delhi has been regularly conducting OPDs and patient awareness and consultations at Mehta Nursing home to cater to the growing needs of the residents of Sirsa.
