National Institute of Nursing Education Celebrates World Mental Health Day

Chandigarh 10th October:- National Institute of Nursing Education, PGI, and Chandigarh celebrated World Mental Health Day on 10Th October 2015. The Function was organized by the Faculty and M.Sc. Nursing students of Mental Health Nursing Specialty, under the leadership of Principal, NINE, Dr. Sandhya Ghai. The function commenced with the unfolding of the theme for the year i.e. 'Dignity in mental Health' by Dr. Sandhya Ghai. She threw light upon the stigma, discrimination and exclusion faced by people with mental illness. She further highlighted upon importance of raising awareness regarding rehabilitation and extending support to people with mental health conditions so that they continue to live with pride & dignity.  Beyond this, she also encouraged students to reflect upon their own mental health. She added that serving with smile and extending that smile to others can be the first step towards promotion of mental health. Following this, an expressive emotional writing session was taken up for all the students wherein they were told to express all their pent up negative emotions in the form of writing. The write ups and mentioned problems were further discussed and efforts were made to resolve them.

The session was organized by Dr. Sunita Sharma, Dr. Karobi Das & Dr. Nitasha Sharma. This was followed by a session of deep breathing and relaxation by Dr. Sunita Sharma. A session of laughter therapy was too conducted by Dr. Avinash Kaur Rana. All the present students felt highly rejuvenated and energetic with such sessions. Last but not the least; an open forum was organized by the members of Alcohol Anonymous & Narcotic Anonymous to raise awareness on role of such self help groups in maintaining recovery in patients with substance use disorders. The members of the group gave their own testimonies to express their journey of recovery. It was further reinforced that the nursing students shall disseminate this knowledge to bring a change into lives of suffering community.
