Chandigarh 17th October:- The music lovers of city beautiful were treated to a sparkling Sitar recital by Mohsin Ali Khan on the occasion of the 215th Monthly Baithak Programme organized by Pracheen Kala Kendra here today. The Bhaskar Rao Indoor Auditorium reverberated in an ebb and flow between the melodious strains from the masterful performance and the applause of the audience. Mohsin kept the audience enthralled by the sheer and clean beauty of his skillful fingers racing the length of the Sitar.
Mohsin belongs to Moradabadi Gharana and he honed his musical skills and developed an individual inimitable style of his own. Mohsin is a very elegant player of Sitar and inspiration of today's generation. He evolves a vibrant, lovely tone from instrument which is consistently tuneful and particularly adept at pulling wavy 'harkat' from the stretched strings. He has two bands namely symphony and fusion.
Mohsin began recital with the quiet dignity of the methodical and reposeful alap in Raga "Puriya Kalyan". This was followed by jod-alap and jod-jhala which were a variant of the usual Sitar playing. His touch, strokes, glides and subsequent production of tonal and microtonal effects points to his sound training. Mohsin's sensitive yet controlled handling of the instrument was testimony to his talent and dedication to music. His rhythmic and melodic vitality shone throughout his performance.
He then moved on to present to two gats. The vilambit gat followed by drut (fast) composition was set to the time cycle of 16 beats (teen taal). His beautiful rendition kept the audience wanting more. Mohsin concluded his recital with a Dhun in Raga Bhairavi amid thunderous applause. The rhythm on the tabla was marked by Avirbhav Verma. A well well-known Tabla player in his own right.
Kendra Registrar Dr. Shobha Koser and Secretary Sajal Koser honoured the artists.
