“Holistic Health is the New Consciousness”:Narendra Modi

Chandigarh 11th September:- Holistic health is the new consciousness today, as people are looking for good health more than medicines.  Today we have to address the wellness more than the illness. This was stated by Narendra Modi Prime Minister while addressing the young doctors during the XXXIV Convocation of PGI.  Narendra Modi while talking to the new postgraduates said that this was the time to test their education and the time to connect with the suffering of humanity.  He said that those who connect with the patient and not the disease are more successful because they understand the psyche behind the patient's disease.  You have a responsibility towards the society, towards the most neglected and the lowly, because the society has contributed in making you doctors.  The Prime Minister connected today's 11/9 with various events in the history falling on the same dates.  Earlier he congratulated the doctors and said that they were an inspiration for the school children who were sitting there watching them receive the degrees.  He showed his gratitude to PGIMER for accepting his request to invite ordinary school children for the occasion. 

 J P Nadda, President of the Institute and Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare thanked the Prime Minister for coming all the way to bless the Institute and the students.  He apprised the Prime Minister about the efforts of the Institute in realizing his vision of Digital India and Swachh Bharat. He said that PGI Chandigarh is working towards full implementation of E-HOSPITAL. Online OPD registration is already working and the institution is in the process to automate its diagnostic services and payment facilities in a time bound manner. With these facilities in place, a lot of time and effort of the patients will be saved. To realize the dream of SWACHH BHARAT, we have launched a scheme KAYAKALP to promote SWACHHATA in our hospitals. He is sure PGI will actively participate in this scheme and win laurels for itself. 

About the initiatives taken by the Government he informed that we have announced 10 NEW AIIMS like institutions in various parts of the country. Existing medical colleges are being upgraded by setting up of Super specialty blocks in 70 medical colleges in the entire country. We are expanding the network of our medical colleges in a big way by upgrading 58 district hospitals to medical colleges. 20 State cancer institutes and 50 Tertiary cancer care centers are being set up.  Our government's vision is delivery of quality tertiary care services to our citizens.

Earlier Prof Yogesh Chawla, Director PGI gave a lowdown on the Institute's history and latest developments. "The Institute has conducted cutting-edge research in both clinical and basic sciences.  Our focus of research looks for finding practical solutions applicable to our population.  Many of our research outputs have become national programmes. We showcase our research on Annual Research Day and also conduct Innovation bazaar by our students and faculty to come out with affordable medical solutions. He added that to improve the patient care in this region, we have been mentoring the AIIMS Rishikesh and developing a satellite centre at Sangrur. We plan to develop a Neurosciences centre, Mother and Newborn centre, Geriatric and chronic rehabilitation Centre and many others. We look forward to more land, adjacent to existing PGI and funds to expand the facilities so that present rush may be streamlined.

The Prime Minister honoured nine gold medallists. Eight hundred and twenty-five candidates were awarded degrees on the occasion by the President of the Institute. Forty-six silver medals and forty-one bronze medals were also awarded to students from various specialities.
