By 121 News

Chandigarh 18th March:- Dr Lucy Robertson, Professor & Head of Parasitology Laboratory at Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Norway, visited the department of parasitology, PGI, Chandigarh. She interacted with the faculty, residents, research scholars and PhD students and discussed about various parasitic infections, particularly on food borne parasites. Also, she delivered a talk on 'climate change and zoonotic parasites'.

She also highlighted the importance of the climate change and its influence over the lifecycle, survival, and transmission of zoonotic parasites. She explained in detail how the climate changes might lead to increase in the prevalence of parasitic infections in human quoting important examples from the published literature. For example warmer temperatures may speed up and exacerbate lifecycles, while more intense rainfalls may result in flooding that can increase the chances of contamination of water supplies and foodstuffs. Her talk was very thought provoking. Her visit opened new doors for the possibilities of collaborative research work along with some of the ongoing projects in parasitic infections. The visit was sponsored by the Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Education (SIU) as part of the ZooPa project held under the Utforsk Programme.
