Chandigarh 04th February:-Dr Neerja Bharti, Additional Professor in the Department of Anaesthesia and critical care, PGIMER, Chandigarh has been awarded first prize in the scientific research presentation on pain management in breast cancer patients at international conference of "Asian and Ocean Society of Regional Anaesthesia and Pain Management" held at Bangkok in association with Royal College of Anaesthesiologists, Thailand. The theme of the conference was "Perioperative Quality and Safety in Anesthesia and Pain Medicine: Unity in Diversity". About more than 800 practitioners and researchers along with related disciplines from both eastern and western continents attended the conference.
Dr. Neerja Bharti has over 50 publications in various reputed international and national journals. She is currently actively involved in the management of chronic pain and cancer pain. In India, more than one million new cancer cases are recorded every year. Breast cancer is the 2ndmost common cancer after lung cancer in general population and the first most common cancer in women in India. Breast cancer is associated with considerable pain. Surgical trauma in combination with muscle spasms is thought to be responsible for the acute discomfort experienced by the majority of patients immediately after surgery. Inadequately managed pain in the acute postoperative phase is also a risk factor for chronic pain syndromes in breast surgery patients which manifest as pain in surgical scar, chest wall and upper arm as well as shoulder discomfort and phantom breast dysesthesias and parasthesias. Effective pain management leads to patient comfort and therefore satisfaction, earlier mobilization, fewer pulmonary and cardiac complications, reduced risk of deep venous thrombosis, faster recovery with reduced cost of care.
