By 121 News Reporter

Chandigarh 16th January: -- Over 500 senior citizens today participated enthusiastically in a Friends of Fortis Meet organized by the Orthopaedics department of Fortis Hospital, Mohali. The function was supported by the Railway Senior Citizens Welfare Association and Para Military Force Retired Personnel Association. Pawan Bansal, Member of Parliament, Chandigarh was the Chief Guest while the Guest of Honour was noted singer Pammi Bai. Dr. Harsimran Singh, Director, Department of Orthopedics & Joint Replacement, Fortis Hospital, Mohali addressed the audience and spoke about the latest advancements and benefits of joint replacements.

A highlight of the function was a 'bhangra with a difference' as patients, who had undergone hip and knee replacements did an energetic bhangra and giddha to express their happiness after getting advanced treatment at Fortis. Dressed in traditional attire, the performers, a majority of them in their mid 50s and 60s, had words of praise for the latest advancements in the medical sciences. Enthused by the patients Pawan Kumar Bansal and Pammi Bai also joined in the revelry and shook a leg with the participants.  Another touching moment was when a play was presented which showcased the agony of a girl who got Rheumatoid Arthritis when she was just 16, lived in extreme pain and was confined to bed for many years.  After being crippled for 24 years with 90 degree fixed flexion deformity – knees were folded - she came to Fortis when she was 40 years old. Dr Harsimran Singh performed a computer-navigated joint replacement surgery on her three years ago and she was able to walk on the second day itself after the surgery. The name of this girl was Miss Reema Vasundhra of Panchkula  and the crowd broke into an emotional applause when the actual Reema Vasundhara stood up and recounted her story, her hopes and aspirations and how Fortis and the latest medical technologies helped her get her life back.

According to  Dr Harsimran Singh, patients undergoing knee replacement surgery could lead a healthy life and perform their daily ardas, namaz, pooja etc. while sitting cross-legged or squatting and could even perform bhangra and giddha but with extra care. He said obesity and a  sedentary lifestyle had made Punjabis vulnerable to arthritis. Over five lakh Punjabis had been suffering from arthritis. Shedding extra weight might relieve arthritis pain, he advised. Incidentally, the Aesculap Academy Germany has felicitated Dr. Harsimran Singh as being North's No. 1 Surgeon performing computer-navigated joint replacement surgeries. He has done the maximum and most successful such surgeries at Fortis Hospital Mohali. He is also the Training Faculty for Zimmer Institute.

An extremely excited and happy couple who had participated in the Bhangra, Mrs & Mr. Kulbir Singh Gill, were all praises for the positive change a joint replacement surgery had brought into their lives. "While my wife had a knee replacement, I had got my hip replaced at Fortis. Today it was so good to be able to dance along with other persons who had got their joints replaced. Before the surgery our movements had become very restricted and painful. Life had become gloomy but the sunshine is back in our lives now. When we were shouting 'Balle Balle' on the stage, it radiated our inner optimism and confidence." The other patients Raj Dulari Gupta, K S Chhabra, Shiv Charan Singh, Kamaljit Kaur, Gurcharan Singh etc.  echoed these sentiments

Col HS Chehal, Regional Director – North, Fortis Healthcare pointed out that Fortis Hospital Mohali had the most successful and safe joint replacement programme in North India. The use of computer navigation in performing this surgery made it absolutely precise and minimized risk.
