Chandigarh 27th January:-- A group of five young scientists of Hallmark Public School, Panchkula, have won the North Zone leg of the First Lego league(FLL) robotics contest, held recently. The contest was part of an International S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) program based in Manchester. The team has won in the regional competition and has qualified to take part in the Nationals which will take place on Feb 10 in Pune.
According to Mrs. Kavita Wadhwa, Principal, Hallmark Public School, that their school has done the tricity proud, by winning the Northern leg of this competition, which tests scientific & abilities of logic of students. In case the team wins in Pune, it will travel to Manchester for the grand International Finale."
Each year competing schools are given a different real-world issue that requires a solution. This year's Challenge is "NATURE'S FURY". Hallmark's team which is christened 'Ignited Minds', chose 'Earthquake' as its topic as the region is susceptible to tremors. In the North Zone leg using Robotics, the students were to successfully complete 10 tasks on a laid out inhabited area, which was first to be created by using Lego blocks. The missions included positioning an evacuation sign; clear an airplane's runway from debris; land a cargo plane safely on a runway; relocate structures; distribute basic supplies to people in need, etc. with the help of a Robot. Each activity had to be completed in 2.5 minutes. Hallmark Public School's team comprising of students from Class VI till VIII Snehil Sharma, Pankhuri Garg, Jatin Chhabra, Meghna Sharma and Kartikeya Mehta finished the tasks in an average time of 2.3 minutes and achieved first position.
Snehil Sharma, a team member, sid that there were teams from schools spread over the entire North Zone. It was a very taxing job as some of the items created had to be made by following as many as 103 steps. The most challenging aspect was the programming of the Robot who was used by us to accomplish required activities.
