Workshop on Musculoskeletal Ultrasound and MRI Concludes

Chandigarh 07th September:--The musculoskeletal ultrasound and MRI workshop being organized by the department of Radiodiagnosis concluded today at PGI, Chandigarh. On this occasion lectures and live ultrasound demonstration of normal anatomy of knee and ankle joints given by the experts.

Prof. PK Srivastava from King George's Medical Univeristy, Lucknow discussed the ultrasound findings of tumors of the soft tissues as well as infections of the musculoskeletal system. Dr. Ashwin Lawande from Mumbai demonstrated the utility of ultrasound in guiding interventional procedures like biopsies, drug instillations into joints and around the nerves. Ultrasound guided injection of anaesthetic agents around the nerves can be used to induce nerve blocks and reduce the severe pain caused by irritation of the nerves.

Sports' injuries affecting the knee joint are very common and may involve the ligaments and menisci of the joint. While the role of ultrasound in screening for injuries of the knee joint was discussed, it was stressed that MRI of the knee is required to definitely diagnose tears of the ligaments and the menisci. Prof. Peter Munk from the Vancouver General Hospital, Canada and Prof. Wilfred Peh, Senior Consultant, Department of Diagnostic Radiology, National University of Singapore, delivered talks on MR Imaging of the knee joint.
