Bhatinda Dec. 19, 2020:- A team of doctors at Fortis Hospital, Mohali led by Dr. RK Jaswal, Director & HOD, Cardiology & CathLab and performed a landmark procedure using an advanced technology 'Rotablation' to treat an 83 years old male patient Col. Niranjan Singh Julia from Bathinda with severely calcified arterial blockages in all the three arteries.

The patient did not undergo the advised cardiac bypass surgery for three years and recently contracted a COVID-19 infection which resulted in a massive heart attack. The patient was put on a ventilator at a private hospital in Bathinda.

Given critical heart condition along with COVID-19, Hepatitis B, and Cancer (multiple myeloma), he was found to be a very high-risk patient and hence unfit for Bypass surgery. The patient being critical along with so many comorbidities was referred to and brought to in a state of emergency to Fortis Hospital, Mohali. Although he was advised bypass surgery, the team of doctors headed by Dr. RK Jaswal decided to employ Rotablation technique to avoid multiple Coronary Arterial Bypass Grafting (CABG) procedures. With the Rotablation technique, the amount of calcium in the arteries was modified and cracked, thus making stenting possible in this patient. The patient responded well to the treatment and was discharged within a week.

Speaking about the latest technology, Dr R K Jaswal said that for many years, interventional cardiologists have been trusting their experienced eyes to diagnose and plan treatment after analyzing a coronary angiography for the treatment of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). Over the years, with all the latest technologies available and gaining expertise on them, we have tried to develop Fortis Mohali's Department of Cardiac Sciences as a Centre of Excellence for treatment of highly calcified coronary artery disease using advanced therapy advanced technologies like Rotablation, Intravascular Lithotripsy, Fractional Flow Reserve (FFR) and Optical coherence tomography (OCT).

There is very limited percentage of operators in the world with access and proficiency in these advanced therapy options which offer exceptionally high quality and safe treatment for complex coronary artery disease patients. Our team is one of the most experienced in this high end technology

Fortis Mohali's Department of Cardiac Sciences is one of the only few cardiac centre in the entire upper north India to avail these techniques round-the-clock for CAD patients. Such patients need not travel to US or Singapore for these high end coronary interventions.

Recently, Boston Scientific has declared Fortis Hospital Mohali as the center of excellence for training aspiring National and international doctors in the technique of Rotablation. Dr. R K Jaswal is an authority figure with a lot of experience in all of the aforementioned techniques.
