By 121 News

Chandigarh 25th June:- Punjab, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh Branch of Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists observed 'World Vitiligo Day' to increase awareness about vitiligo (leucoderma). Several activities were undertaken including a 'Vitiligo Awareness Walk' at Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh, consonant with 'walk in our shoes' weekend campaign that is undertaken all over the world on this day, newspaper articles, distribution of pamphlets etc.

Several misconceptions still exist about the disease in people all over the world. The facts that need to be stressed upon are- it is not infectious or contagious, it does not spread by touch or any other means, vitiligo is not always hereditary, no food item is known to cause vitiligo, most often there is only skin involvement, and it is not a curse. It is an autoimmune disease in which the cells responsible for immunity do not gel well with the pigment producing cells in the skin and destroys them. That is why the skin color becomes lighter.

Vitiligo is treatable to a large extent with medical modalities, phototherapy, and even with minor surgical procedures. An individual with vitiligo should not shy away from seeking treatment from a specialist doctor and others should not shy away from befriending an individual with vitiligo. There are several individuals in every walk of life who have vitiligo and it did not prevent them from attaining pinnacles of success. Every vitiligan should take it into their stride, seek medical care for improvement or even cure of their cosmetic impairment, and keep progressing in their lives.
