Chandigarh 09th September:- The Prime Minister of India Narender Modi, will be the Chief Guest on the occasion of 34th Convocation of PGIMER on Friday, the 11th September, 2015. J P Nadda, Hon'ble Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare and President of the Institute will preside over the function.
The Chief Guest will be awarding Gold Medals to nine students for outstanding research and academic excellence. The medals include Kataria Memorial Gold Medal to Dr. Agarwal Aniruddha Kishandutt (Year 2013) and Khaire Niranjan Shiwaji (Year 2014); Major General Amir Chand Gold Medal to Dr.Suresh Kumar in MD/MS/DM/M.Ch category, Dr Ashok Kumar Yadav in Ph. D category (Year 2012), Dr Ramesh Kumar R. in MD/MS/DM/M.Ch category and Dr Kiran Kumar Thumburu in Ph. D category (year 2013); V.K.Saini Gold Medal in the field of Cardiovascular Diseases to Dr Indranil Biswas (Year 2013); Prof Subhash Kumari Gupta Memorial Gold Medal to Dr Balan Louis G. (Year 2013) and Aikat Memorial Gold Medal to Ms.Pratibha Chauhan (Year 2013).
The degrees will be bestowed upon 825 students this year. During this Convocation PhD will be awarded to 49 students; DM (medical super-specialties)of Cardiology, Clinical Pharmacology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Neurology, Nephrology, Neonatology, Neuro Radiology, Pulmonary Medicine, Pediatrics Critical Care & Pediatrics Hemato Oncology to 79; MCh (surgical super-specialties) of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Plastic Surgery, Paediatric Surgery, Surgical Gastroenterology & Urology to 59; MD in the medical specialities of Anaesthesia, Biochemistry, Community Medicine, Dermatology, Medicine, Microbiology, Nuclear Medicine, Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Pathology, Psychiatry, Radiodiagnosis, Radiotherapy & Transfusion Medicine to 345; MS in the surgical specialities of Otorhinolaryngology, orthopaedic surgery, ophthalmology & surgery to 108; MDS (Master of Dental Surgery) to 12; MHA (Master of Hospital Administration) to 6; MPH (Master of Public Health) to 20; MSc in Biochemistry, Medical Biotechnology, Radiodiagnosis, Radiotherapy, Virology, Haematology & Anatomy to 32 and BSc. in para-medical courses to 115. Forty-six silver medals and forty-one bronze medals will also be awarded to students from various specialities.
PGI is always the most sought after Institute for medical education. Since its inception, PGI has established 20 postgraduate (MD/MS) courses in various branches of medicine and surgery, 29 post-doctoral (DM/MCh) courses in various super specialty areas, out of which many are first such courses in the country. In addition, a large number of one-year fellowship courses are in the planning stage and would start within a year. At present, there are 900 students pursuing MD/MS courses, about 250 DM/M.Ch. courses, about 190 PhD courses and about 860 paramedical and nursing courses. PGI has also introduced Masters in Oral Health Sciences, Hospital Administration & Public Health; Bachelors and Masters in Speech & Hearing, Physiotherapy; Bachelors & Masters in Medical Technology & Nursing.
