Chandigarh 12th May:-- To commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing profession PGI celebrated International Nurses Day. PGI is being celebrating International Nurses Week from 12th to 17th May, to mark the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale. The theme for this year is "Nurses: A Force for Change – A Vital Resource for Health."
The week long activities started with inaugural function, organized at Lecture Theatre-I, PGIMER, Chandigarh. The Chief Guest on the occasion was Prof. Y K Chawla, Director, PGIMER, Chandigarh, and the Guest of Honour was Prof. A K Gupta, Medical Superintendent-cum-Head, Department of Hospital Administration, PGIMER, Chandigarh. Rich tributes were paid to the nursing leader under the leadership of Mrs. Jaspal Kaur, Nursing Superintendent.
The inaugural address to welcome the Chief Guest was read by Mrs. Jaspal Kaur, Nursing Superintendent. The theme was introduced by Dr. (Mrs.) Sandhya Ghai, Principal, NINE. This year's theme emphasizes on enhancing the nursing profession and improving nurses ability to provide better healthcare for the patients. Prof. Y K Chawla stressed on the need for specialization among nurses and encouraged the nursing personnel to go in for research. Prof. A K Gupta appreciated the role of nursing personnel in providing healthcare services and encouraged them to do their best. Blood Donation Camp was organized on the eve of Nurses Week. 38 Nurses came forward to donate blood as a mark of respect and gratitude for the suffering humanity. The inaugural function concluded with cake cutting ceremony. Other major attractions of the week are Best General Ward Competition, Symposium on the theme of "Nurses: A Force for Change – A Vital Resource for Health," poster competition and Health Teachings in different areas of the Hospital. All nursing personnel were encouraged to participate actively in all the programmes and make this theme a reality so that best health care services can be provided.
