MC Teej Festival : Punjabi folk, Giddha & Bhangra Mark The Festival

Chandigarh 10th August:-- The two days Teej festival was opened with great zeal in the Shivalik Garden, Manimajra, here today. The colourful function, organized by the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh today in the morning inaugurated by Mrs. Prerna Puri, Secretary IT and Additional Secretary, Home, UT. Chd. in presence of Mayor Subhash Chawla, Mrs. Gurbax Rawat, Chairperson, Arts, Culture & Sports committee, Lalit Siwach, Additional Commissioner, Area councillor Gurcharan Dass Kalaa, Councillor Desh Raj Gupta, , other councillors & officers of MC and prominent personalities of area.

The function was marked with Punjabi, Haryanvi, Rajasthani, Himachali & Uttaranchali folk dances, songs, fusion of Giddha & Bhangra and Teeian de Geet by famous artists of various states. The audience present in the Mela could not stop themselves to dance on the foot-tapping beats of "Dhol" and popular Punjabi numbers. Mrs. Prerna Puri stressed upon the necessity to perpetuate cultural values among the masses especially in younger generation. She also enlightened the gathering about the social, religious and historical significance of the Teej Festival. Other attractions of the Mela was including camel rides, cart rides, "Pind Di Nuhar", puppet show, Magic show by famous magician Pardeep, different stalls of sweets and lassi, Maal-Pua, handi crafts, designer fabrics and other domestic items etc. The stage was decorated with colourful lights and traditional "Jhandian" flags. East meets West as the streets fill with musical sounds, with everything from traditional folk, beats of Dhol and Teej diya Bolliyan to fusion of Giddha and Bhangra

While addressing the gathering Subhash Chawla, Mayor said that Municipal Corporation Chandigarh will make this Mela as an annual feature like Rose Festival and an agenda regarding this decision will be brought in the next general house meeting of MC. He said that people of Chandigarh should know about their rich culture and we the Municipal Corporation are making small effort to gather the precious traditional festivals like Teej. Earlier, Mrs. Gurbax Rawat welcomed the chief Guest and other dignitaries and honoured the chief guest with giving traditional fulkari to her. The chief guest took a round in the Mela spread in the 20 acre of shivalik Garden.

Tomorrow morning the Mela will began with folk dances from various states including Uttarkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana. A culture evening will also be organized by famous folk singer Bittu Bajwa and Nishu Raja, Jassi & Happy etc. During the culture evening Star cast of upcoming Punjabi film 'Put Zattan De' will also perform.
