PGI Organizes CME and Workshop on 'Irreversible Electroporation':The Novel Method of Cancer Treatment

Chandigarh 29^th April:- The first CME and workshop on 'Irreversible Electroporation' , the novel method of cancer treatment, was inaugurated today at PGI, Chandigarh by Prof. YK Chawla, Director of the Institute in the presence of Prof. S Varma, Dean of the Institute, Prof. N. Khandelwal, Chairman and Head, Department of Radiodiagnosis and Prof. Naveen Kalra, Organizing Secretary of the meeting. Speaking on the occasion Prof. Chawla said that the Institute had the privilege of having the first and only installation of the 'Irreversible Electroporation' machine or 'Nanoknife' in the entire country. Prof. N. Khandelwal said that the department has always been a part of the larger team against cancer and had played a crucial role in the screening, diagnosis, staging and treatment of cancer.

During the course of the day there were didactic lectures by eminent national and international experts including Prof. Naveen Kalra, Prof. Anupam Lal and Prof. Govindarajan Narayanan, Chief of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, Miami, USA.  Dr. Narayanan stressed that this new technique, which works by using very high voltage current between multiple probes or needles, can be used in treating cancers close to blood vessels and other vital structures.

Cancer of the liver is best treated by surgical removal and liver transplantation. However when the tumor is unresectable by surgical means does the scope of using other methods arises. Nanoknife is recommended for small tumors close to the liver surface or abutting the major blood vessels of the liver and the biliary system. Another cancer which is ideally suited for treatment with Nanoknife is small locally advanced pancreatic cancer. Again these cancers cannot be surgically treated as they are close to blood vessels and this is a safe zone for this novel technique. 

At the end of the day there was a panel discussion in which interesting cases were discussed with the experts in interventional oncology.  About 150 practicing radiologists and clinicians along with student delegates are attending this academic feast.

 

 

252 Lakshites Selected out of 371 Students for JEE Advanced 2016

Chandigarh 29^th April:- Punjabi students continued their dominance in the Joint Examination Entrance-Main, the results of which were announced by the Central Board of  Secondary Education on Wednesday. Danish bansal of Lakshya Institute secured 301 marks.  Pranav Chawla got 299 marks among other 13 Punjabi students scored marks above 250.

Speaking to media an elated Danish Bansal who appeared in the offline mode of JEE Main, said that he did expect a good score in the examination. He will repeat the same success in the JEE Advanced. He wants to pursue computer science engineering at Indian Institute of Technology-Mumbai.  The CBSE also announced the cut off mark for appearing for appearing JEE advanced. For general category, the cut-off mark is 100, 70 for other backward class, 52 for Scheduled caste and 48 for Scheduled tribes. 

Sahil Harjai, executive Director , Lakshya thanked students and their parents for having faith in Lakshya, Punjab's leading Institute in producing Medical and non Medical Selections from past one Decade, we maintained its streak of success by producing 252 qualify out of 371 students for JEE Advanced 2016.

Of the total qualified in the entrance test, two lakh students would be eligible to sit for JEE Advanced scheduled on May 22. All eligible candidates have to register online athttp://jeeadv.nic.in from April 29 to May 4 and admit cards can be downloaded from May 11 to May 22.  The results of JEE Advanced will be declared on June 12. The JEE Advanced is conducted for admissions into Indian Institutes of Technologies. The CBSE will declare separate ranks list of JEE main for admissions into BE/B Teach, BArch/B Planning in the National Institutes of Technology and centrally funded technical institutes other than Indian Institutes of Technology on or before June 30.  The ranks are calculated by taking 60 per cent of JEE Main and normalized score (40 per cent weight age) of intermediate public examinations.

GGSCW-26 Holds its 37th Annual Convocation:424 Degrees Conferred

Chandigarh 27^th April:- Post Graduate Guru Gobind Singh College for Women, Sector 26,Chandigarh organized its 37^th Annual Convocation in the college premises here on April 27^th 2016. H.E. Prof. Kaptan Singh Solanki, Hon'ble Governor of Punjab and Administrator, U.T Chandigarh was the Chief Guest and Parimal Rai, was the Guest of Honour. After the introduction of the Staff, the Chief Guest along with Academic Procession entered the hall to the melodious tunes of Sitar played by the college students. The ceremony commenced with the National Anthem.

 Col (Retd.) J.S Bala (Secretary, Sikh Educational Society) welcomed the Chief Guest. College Principal Dr. Charanjeet Kaur Sohi accorded floral welcome to the Chief Guest and presented the annual report of the college highlighting the achievements and activities of the college faculty and students.

Total 424 Degrees were conferred by the Chief Guest on the occasion to the students of M.Com, MA, MSc.(IT), BA, B.Com, BCA.

The Chief Guest, His Excellency in his convocation address, felicitated the degree holders and wished them success in their future endeavors. He praised Guru Gobind Singh Ji's teachings and the motto of the college which is " shubh karman te kabhu na taroo (May I never refrain from the righteous acts)." PGI Holds Immune Deficiency Clinic at APC

Chandigarh 27^th April:- Primary Immunodeficiency Disorders (PIDs) are conditions in which part of the body's immune system does not function properly.  These disorders are inherited conditions and affected children get recurrent infections in the form of repeated pneumonia, diarrhea, skin and soft tissue infections. Majority present in early infancy, although milder forms may not get recognized until adulthood. Data collected from several countries in Europe and North America suggests that approximately 1:1000 individuals are affected with PID.

In most developing countries  of these disorders go unrecognized due to lack of awareness both among medical fraternity as well  as the lay public. However, of late, more and more children are being identified at PGI and currently more than 300 children are being followed up at the Immune Deficiency Clinic at APC, PGI. Treatment of these disorders is difficult and expensive. Quite a few children who have antibody deficiencies need monthly replacement with Intravenous Immunologlobulin (IVIg). This treatment has to be continued lifelong. However, for certain more serious PIDs the only curative therapy is bone marrow transplantation. 

The need of intravenous Immunoglobulins, which is life saving drug for these children, to be freely available and at a cheaper cost in India was highlighted. Many parents also recounted their experience and expressed the difficulties faced by them.

Over the last few years, many donors and philanthropists have come forward and helped out these children and Sukhmani Foundation is one of them. These organizations and individuals   have generously and selflessly contributed to the care and well being of these children and their families. However, with the ever increasing cost of therapy more help is needed for these patients. We need more people to adopt these children and help them.

Walmart India Launches`Entrepreneurship Development Program’ for Women Owned Businesses

Chandigarh 27^th April:- Walmart India, a wholly owned subsidiary of Walmart Stores Inc., launched the `Entrepreneurship Development Program' for Women-Owned Businesses(WOBs) today by introducing the 32 selected participants of the program at an event, which was attended by female entrepreneurs, retail industry experts, NGOs, government officials and media. The program aims to enhance the participants' skills, capability and sustainability.

The 32 WOBs announced today comprise the first batch selected for the program, which is being implemented by WEConnect International and Vrutti. During the nine-month program, the women will undergo capacity building training, mentoring and technical support customized to the needs of their businesses.

The program was announced in January 2016 inviting applications from WOBs in different categories located in Andhra Pradesh, Delhi NCR, Telangana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.

Speaking at the launch, KrishIyer, President & CEO, Walmart India, said that he is extremely delighted to announce the selection of 32 WOBs under the `Walmart Women Entrepreneurship Development Program'. This initiative is designed to help women entrepreneurs achieve higher levels of business growth and help make them more competitive and resilient in today's dynamic business environment. CITCO Along with SBOP Launches New Pedal Boats

Chandigarh 27^th April:- CITCO in collaboration with State Bank of Patiala launched 40 new pedal boats for leisure boating at Sukhna Lake today. The new boats were handed over in a ceremony for overall promotion of boating tourism in Chandigarh. Anurag Aggarwal, Home secretary, UT, Chandigarh was the Chief Guest. Also present were S. A. Ramesh Rangan, Managing Director, State Bank of Patiala, Kavita Singh, Managing Director, CITCO, Chandigarh and Papia Sengupta, Chief General Manager, SBP, Navjot Kaur, CGM CITCO, senior officials of the Bank, Devendra Kumar, General Manager, Retail Network, Rajat Banerjee, Deputy General Manager, Chandigarh zone and other officials.

A blood donation camp was organized in coordination with Government Multispecialty Hospital Sector-16, Chandigarh in which around 61 donors from SBP staff and general public donated blood. A free health check up was also organized on this occasion in collaboration with Max Hospital, Mohali.
