Chandigarh, June 16, 2025:-The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) reiterated its clear and strong opposition to the "One Nation, One Election" (ONOE) proposal. Party President Vijaypal Singh, General Secretary Omkar Singh Aulakh, Disciplinary Committee Convenor P. P. Ghai, Advocate Ferry Soft, and Media In-Charge Vikrant A. Tanwar participated in the important discussion and strongly highlighted the constitutional, political, and social risks posed by ONOE.
Vijaypal Singh said that you are searching for drops of nectar in poison — but poison remains poison. With this sharp statement, he emphasized that while ONOE may appear attractive at first glance, its deeper impact is toxic and threatens the very core values of the Indian Constitution.
Advocate Ferry Soft stated that based on constitutional articles 1, 14, 19, 246, 324, 368(2), and the 73rd & 74th Amendments, the ONOE proposal violates the basic structure of the Constitution. Granting the power to defer elections to the Election Commission is a serious interference with Article 324.
Omkar Singh Aulakh pointed out that our current electoral system has functioned smoothly for decades. There is no pressing need to replace it. Implementing ONOE would require massive resources — EVMs, security forces, staff, and infrastructure — which is impractical and unsustainable.
Vikrant A. Tanwar highlighted the media impact that ONOE would shift the focus of media and public discourse solely to national issues, silencing local voices and regional parties. This would damage the soul of Indian democracy.
The party leadership also stated that the environment of the committee meeting made it evident that the views of political parties have been reduced to a mere formality.
BJP is moving towards forcibly passing this unconstitutional bill. Aam Aadmi Party openly opposes this move.
Constitutional Objections Raised by AAP:
1. Violation of federal structure (Articles 1, 246)
2. Weakening of state autonomy
3. Threat to the autonomy of the Election Commission (Article 324)
4. Attempt to amend the Constitution under Article 368(2) without the consent of state assemblies
5. Forcing regional parties into an unequal electoral playing field
6. Ignoring local democracy and Panchayati Raj institutions (73rd, 74th Amendments)
Aam Aadmi Party Demands:
1. Immediate withdrawal of the ONOE proposal
2. Retention of the phased election model, which upholds the true spirit of Indian democracy
Under the leadership of Chandigarh State AAP President Vijaypal Singh Ji, the party delegation submitted written responses point-by-point to all questions asked by the Joint Parliamentary Committee.
The Aam Aadmi Party remains committed to protecting democracy, constitutional values, and federalism, and will continue to raise public awareness on this issue.
