Bhatinda, March, 08, 2021:- 16-year-old, Akashdeep Sharma, came to Fortis Hospital Mohali with pain in the wrist from last 5 months. He had a history of fall, wherein he fell riding the bike followed by pain and swelling. This is in medical terminology is called fall on an outstretched hand (FOOSH).

Initial X-rays were misdiagnosed as normal and patient was given some rest and analgesic. When the pain didn't go completely, he was referred to Fortis Hospital, Mohali for a second opinion with Dr. Vishal Gautam, Attending Consultant, Bone and Joint, Fortis Hospital.

"We were in a fix", said Akashdeep's father Naresh Sharma, added that this boy has a great talent in basketball and I cannot see his potential being sabotaged by something as such. He was having pain in the grip and reduced grip strength. He was out of sports for the last 5 months.

Dr. Gautam explained that we did fresh X-rays and on Akashdeep and found out that the boy was having a fracture of scaphoid with a gap of around 3 mm. The child was a national level basketball player and wanted complete normal wrist. After considering everything, we decided to operate on Akashdeep as the bone was getting into a non-union. We decided to operate on the child in the same week within which we removed all the dead part of the bone and filled with the gap with cancellous bone grafts supplemented by vascularised bone grafting. This whole fixation was fixed a headless screw and the child was put in a cast for a period of 6 weeks. The child postoperative period went uneventful and he showed complete union in 4 months.

Akash's father, Parveen said that Akashdeep represented in National level junior basketball tournament and won! He has shown a will to fight but more than that we will forever be grateful to Dr. Vishal Gautam, who stood by my side in times of trial and treated my child effectively.
