Chandigarh Dec. 16, 2020:- In a statement Kamaljit Singh Panchhi, President Chandigarh Traders Association Sector-17 Chandigarh, stated that civic body was formed by the Government of India in the year 1994. There is a provision of nominated councilors in the Act at the time of formation of civic bodies who are experts in the fields and give their advice on the working of Municipal Corporation Chandigarh run by the Mayor and elected counselors and they have been doing this job successfully.

K S Panchhi said that the Administration issued a notification increase in elected councilors from 26 to 35 and the same is welcomed and Nominated councilors numbers should also be increased.

He urged Administrator Chandigarh to increase the numbers of nominated councilors from (9 to 13) Nine to Thirteen. Because Chandigarh is a Planned and Modern city, hence the increase in the nominated councilors would be very useful for the city. He further urged the e Administrator to take a concrete decision on amending the Municipal Corporation Act regarding Electing the Mayor directly by the citizens of Chandigarh as Haryana have already adopted the pattern of direct election of Mayor with five year term. This needs to be considered in Chandigarh also.
