NINE and Newborn Unit Organize Workshop on Training of Trainers on Facility Based Neonatal Nursing, and Quality Improvement

Chandigarh 02nd June:- A national level three days workshop on "Training of Trainers on Facility Based Neonatal Nursing, and Quality Improvement" was jointly organized by National Institute of Nursing Education(NINE) and Newborn unit, Department of Pediatrics, PGI at NINE from 30th May to 1stJune.  The event was supported by WHO, India country office, and coordinated by WHO-Newborn CC, AIIMS, New Delhi and conducted under guidance of Dr. Praveen Kumar, acting HOD newborn unit, Department of Pediatrics, PGI as organizing chairperson and Dr. Sandhya Ghai, Principal NINE as organizing secretary. Dr O N Bhakoo, former professor and head Department of Pediatrics, PGI, was the Chief guest for the inaugural ceremony. Dr. Praveen Kumar highlighted on the lack of; integration of nursing service and nursing education and autonomy in the nursing profession.

Dr. O N Bhakoo while addressing the participants mentioned that nurses have significant role in newborn care, whereas unfortunately there are no specialized cadres for them and we need to focus on cadre structuring and accreditation. He further added that to keep pace with western world, we need to have Neonatal Nursing Practioners in India and also start course for M.Sc in neonatal nursing as early as possible. He mentioned that the quality improvement in facilities providing newborn care is the need of the hour and the health care professionals must take small projects to improve quality care in their area of work. He emphasized that members of Indian Association of Neonatal Nurses (IANN) must take initiative to strengthen the association.

Special Guest Dr Jyoti Sarin, Director and head of Maharishi Markandeshwar College of Nursing, Mullana, Ambala and President IANN, highlighted the importance of nurses in newborn care and described the role and activities carried out by IANN to educate and train neonatal nurses.

Total fifty two physicians and nurses completed the training, out of which thirty were sponsored by WHO; India country office and remaining were sponsored by UNICEF or by their state governments. On day one of workshop evidence based standard treatment protocols were taught and on day two facilitation techniques related to essential newborn care module for level 2 facilities were demonstrated. On day three Dr. Ashok Deorari, Professor , Department of Pediatrics, coordinator  WHO Collaborating Centre for Education & Research in Newborn Care, All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Dr Praveen Kumar with their team Dr. S. Venktasheshan and Dr. Deepak Chawla taught building blocks for quality improvement. Dr. Ashok Deorari also motivated the physicians and nurses to work as a team to improve the quality in care and under his vision and leadership the overall event was successfully completed. The program ended with valedictory function and certificate distribution.
