Chandigarh 01st April:- The program for the 5th day of national workshop on clinical pharmacology began with talk on rational use of medicines by Dr. SP Dhaneria, Professor and Head AIIMS, Raipur. He also interacted with the delegates on essential medicines list making it clear that essential medicines are needed for priority health conditions, at all times in adequate quantity and assured quality in the country.
The event was furthered by lecture by Dr Smita Pattanaik, PGI who introduced the delegates to the concepts of therapeutic drug monitoring. She also discussed the practices and pitfalls of monitoring the drug concentration. This was followed by Dr. SC Chopra, who delivered talk about basic pharmacokinetics.
The importance of understanding the basic pharmacokinetic parameters and use of these in aiding clinical decision making was taken up by Dr. Sandeep Kaushal, Professor and Head, DMC Ludhana. Dr. Arvind Pandey, ICMR gave a talk on the clinical trial registry platform. He stressed upon need of registering the ongoing clinical research studies for making the clinical research more transparent and to reduce unnecessary duplication of trials answering the same research question.
Dr .Pawan Kumar singh, from SIRO Clinpharm spoke about the challenges in accredition of trial sites, ethics committees and an investigator which is needed to rebuild the confidence of the community in clinical research. Program for the day was brought to end by exhaustive hands on practice sessions on various psychomotor, cardiovascular and pharmacokinetic exercises; taken up by residents and faculty.
