Chandigarh 08th April:- PGI Director Prof. Yogesh Chawla, has been awarded with Padma Shri by the President of India at Rashtrapati Bhawan, New Delhi. This great honour has come to him due to his excellence in the field of medicine.
Dr. Yogesh Chawla did his M.B.B.S and M.D. (Medicine) from Jabalpur University, Madhya Pradesh. He did his D.M. (Gastroenterology) from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He joined the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh as a Lecturer in Hepatology in October 1983 and rose to become Head, Department of Hepatology in November, 1995 and Professor and Head in December, 1999. He joined as the Director of the Institute on 7th October, 2011. Dr. Yogesh Chawla, Director, PGIMER, Chandigarh received the Blumberg Oration on "Hepatitis B Eradication" by Kalinga Gastroenterology Foundation on 28th July 2011 at Cuttack. He also has received the prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy Medical Council of India Silver Jubilee Research Award 1999 for research in the field of Hepatology. His ICMR Awards include M.N. Sen Oration Award (1997) for his work on "Portal Hemodynamics" and Amrut Mody Unichem Prize (Gastroenterology 1999) for work on "Ectopic Varices in Portal Hypertension". The Indian Society of Gastroenterology conferred on him the Parke Davis Oration Award on "Non-Cirrhotic Portal Hypertension in India" at Cochin (2002-2003), Olympus J. Mitra Award for disseminating knowledge and expertise of GI Endoscopy 1999-2000 and Pfizer Amir Chand Trophy for the Department for outstanding original contribution in the field of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, 1999-2001.
He is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, (Australia), Hepatology International (Japan), Liver International (Denmark), Digestive Disease and Science (US) and Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hepatology (India). He is also an Advisory Board Member of the Annals of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (India). He is a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology and National Academy of Medical Sciences. He is a Member of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), European Association for Study of Liver (EASL), International Association for Study of Liver (IASL), Asian Pacific Association for Study of Liver (APASL). He is also a Life Member of the Indian Association for Study of Liver (INASL), Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG), Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India (SGEI) and Indian Society of Organ Transplantation (ISOT).
