Mohali,13th December:--Shemrock School, Mohali organized a mock
parliament for its students of classes 9 and 10 in the school campus,
it is an exercise meant to create awareness among them about the
functioning of the top legislative body in the country.
The students actively participated and showed great enthusiasm
regarding the working of the Parliament. They enacted the role of the
ruling as well as opposition party MPs besides Ministers and the
Speaker. The ministers were also appointed by each class with special
voting procedures in their respective classes. Among the
representatives, only the prime minister was elected by the entire
school, who is also the school leader. Starting from oath taking
ceremony by the speaker, the session was presented in an effective
manner by the students. Different issues concerning society were put
on debate by the students. The mock parliament session was divided
into two parts. The first one took the question hour. In this session
members raised various questions on burning issues from objectives of
CCE,delays in salaries of MNREGA, problems faced by tribal people,
honour killing, inheritance law of two districts of Lahaul Spiti and
Kinnaur,naxalite problem, problem of black - marketing of railway
tickets, Sri Lankan issue and crime against women were discussed and
answers were sought. Sloganeering disruptions, catchy remarks, past
practices, allegations were also made. In the second phase No-
confidence motion was tabled. The bill was presented by the leaders of
the opposition.
While speaking on this occasion Principal Air Commeder (Rtd.)
S.K.Sharma said that Parliament is one of the major pillars of our
democratic system. The students as future leaders and citizens must be
made aware of the working of the parliament to initiate, develop,
cultivate and nurture the ideals of our democratic institutions. The
mock parliament was just the right exercise.The "session" was
conducted the same way the Lok Sabha does its business. Oath taking by
MPs and Presidential address were some of the special features of the
mock session, He further added.The purposes of Youth Parliament is to
make students understand the parliamentary procedure to train students
in the technique of group discussions as well as to make students
aware of various problems facing our society and the country and to
develop in students the quality of leadership.
