Obstetric & Gynecological Society of Northern India Organize Annual Meeting

Chandigarh 14th April:-- The annual meeting of Obstetric and
Gynecological society of Northern India and a Workshop on Endoscopy in
Gynecology organized at PGIMER, Chandigarh concluded on Sunday. The
event was organized by the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology,
PGIMER under the aegis of Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecological
Societies of India. Over 200 delegates from Chandigarh, Punjab,
Haryana and Himachal Pradesh attended the meeting. On Saturday,
DrAlkaKriplani, an eminent edoscopist and her team from AIIMS, Delhi
demonstrated techniques of endoscopic surgeries including Total
laparoscopic hysterectomy, Myomectomy and difficult cases of
endometriosis. Several scientific papers were presented at the
event.The event also saw a session on 'Stump the experts' with
challenging clinical scenarios in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The conference focused on various issues in fetal medicine. Many
eminent experts in this field from Delhi, Hyderabad and Chandigarh
deliberated on controversies in screening and diagnosis of chromosomal
and other malformations in the fetus.
Dr. Singhi opening the symposium on foetal medicine emphasised the
need for multi disciplinary approach in foetal medicine. Dr.
LadbansKaur elaborated on the need for being systematic in the
approach to ultrasound to diagnose genetic disorders in first
trimester of pregnancy. She further elaborated on the various markers
of genetically abnormal foetus on ultrasonography during first
trimester of pregnancy.
Dr. ChinmayeeRatha , a renowned expert in Foetal Medicine from
Hyderabad stressed the need to combine the genetic sonogram with
biochemical tests in assessing the risk for Down's syndrome to avoid
unnecessary invasive tests for confirmation of the same. She also
emphasised the need for patients to approach certified labs for these
tests.
Dr. ReenaDas , a leading Haematologist from PGIMER explained how
certain communities in North India are at higher risk for Thalassemias
and the need to diagnose them very early in life so that prenatal
diagnostic tests can be offered to mothers to help them avoid carrying
babies with this blood disorder
DrKhurana a renowned expert of Foetal Medicine from Delhi explained
the possibility of losing a normal foetus following confirmatory
invasive tests following current screening procedures for genetically
abnormal babies and how this can avoided if some of the newer
technologies to harvest foetal DNA from the mother's circulation are
successful
Dr. MadhulikaKabra from AIIMS Delhi elaborated on the practical
utility of various tests available for thr couples with positive
screen test for suspected genetically abnormal child
DrChanchal Singh from Apollo Hospital Delhi demonstrated the
superiority of laser photocoagulation in the management of twins at
jeopardy of twin-to-twin transfusion. She gave recorded video
demonstration of the procedure.
DrRatnaPuri from Ganga Ram Hospital demonstrated the need for proper
autopsy of the still born babies and those with neonatal deaths to
ascertain the cause so that the couple can be helped in the management
of their future pregnancies
