Lecture on Bone & Joint Problems

Chandigarh 08th June:-Dr R.K. Kanojia, Associate Professor, Department of Orthopaedics, PGIMER delivered a lecture on Bone & Joint Problems under the Golden Jubilee Public Lecture Series in the New OPD Block today. About 150 patients, attendants, young students from outside and senior citizens attended the lecture with great interest ending into a lengthy question-answer session. Some dos and don'ts explained by Dr Kanojia about bone and joint problems are given below:

 

Do's

·  Eat lots of calcium

·  Get lots of Vitamin D

·  Exposure to sunlight

·  Use Commode (western toilet)

·  Maintain posture

·  Do weight bearing exercise

 Don'ts

·  Don't place more stress on your bones, joints, and back than necessary

·  Avoid junk food

·  Avoid excessive flexion of knee joint

·  Avoid using ear phones while walking

·  Avoid smoking and drinking

 

Dr Kanojia further brief that Human body is a combination of soft tissues and bones which provide the inner strength of the body.  Small, long bones and different type of joints form the skeletal system which is being supported by strong muscles, ligaments and lubricant of joints. Bone health is important to build strong and healthy bones in the childhood and teen years to avoid osteoporosis and other bone problems later in life.  Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones are fragile, making them fracture or break much easier. 

Problems of orthopaedics or the bone and joint problems include various diseases inflammation, pain, stiffness, fractures, dislocations, congenital deformities, neoplastic problems and metabolic diseases.

 Computer friendly people who are sitting in front of the small screen with mouse in their hands for long duration has led to the cervical spondylitis, backache and sprain of muscles.

 A combination of a healthy diet and regular exercise is the best way to maintain a healthy body weight. Regular exercise can help to reduce the risk of developing many health-related problems e.g. exercise can combat obesity, improve circulation, and it can help prevent serious conditions, such as heart attack and stroke. 

 Physiotherapy is the assessment and treatment of physical health, and aims to correct disorders of the musculoskeletal system such as: joint pain and stiffness, postural problems, back and neck pain, sports injuries, ligament sprains, arthritis, nerve injury, post-operative problems, muscle weakness etc.
