Cancer of Cervix: PGI Wins Research Award for 2nd Year in Row

Chandigarh 07th December:- A paper presented by PhD scholar, Ms Charu Guleria was adjudged best paper in the recently concluded AGOICON-2016, annual conference of the Association of Gynaecologic Oncologists of India. The research was guided by Prof. Vanita Suri, Head, Dept. of Obstetrics/Gynecology and Prof. Ritu Aggarwal, Dept. of Immunopathology and Prof S.Radhika, Dept. of Cytology and Gynecological Pathology, PGI Chandigarh. The same team was awarded best paper in the last year's meeting at Hyderabad as well.

The team is involved in research on cervical cancer and its causative virus, the Human Papillomavirus. The team demonstrated that HPV infection down regulates the Toll like receptors that constitute important part of immune system. They also observed an increase trend of cancer causing microRNA as a result of HPV infection in women with cancer of cervix.

The research provides insight into the causation of cancer of cervix. Cancer of cervix is one of the common cancers in Indian women. The virus, HPV is well known to cause the deadly cancer. A vaccine is already available against the virus.
