PGI Celebrates International Yoga Day

Chandigarh 21st June:- During International Yoga Day celebrations, Prof. Yogesh Chawla, Dr. Subhash Varma, Dean, Dr. Meenu Singh, Dr. Vipin Koushal, Dr. Sandhya Ghai & Ms Balrajinder Kaur, Warden, NINE Hostel, performed yoga asanas along with students & Staff of NINE. All the participants, including 300 nursing students, were instructed for yoga asanas through Live telecast of International Yoga Day celebrations along with Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, at Capitol Complex by fixing LED wall & plasma screens at various places at National Institute of Nursing Education (NINE) campus. Prof. Yogesh Chawla, at the end of the programme, addressed the students and elaborated on the benefits of Yoga in day to day life and encouraged them to practice yoga for health fitness. Dr. Sandhya Ghai resolved to include Yoga in the daily routine of students and advised students to adopt yoga as a way life as Yoga provides coordination of body, mind & soul, thus helps in prevention of disease by keeping it fit & fine & improves strength for better output.

Dr. Sandhya Ghai, Principal, NINE, under the guidance of Dr. Yogesh Chawla, Director, Mr. Amitabh Avasthi, Deputy Director (Admn.), & Dr. Meenu Singh, Professor, Advance Pediatrics Center, PGIMER, Chandigarh, took special initiative and made arrangement for the training of 210 students through special trainers from the Govt. Institute of Yoga, Sector- 23, Chandigarh in two shifts, one in the morning 6 A.M. to 7 A.M. and the other in the evening 5 P.M. to 6 P.M. More than 200 students of NINE had been doing practice of all the 27 asanas of yoga with great fervor, since last month under National Service Scheme (NSS). Out of 210 registered students, 180 students of NINE were selected to participate in Yoga at the Capitol Complex along with our revered Prime Minister Narendra Modi under the leadership of two Programme Officers of NSS UNIT, NINE, Ms Meenakshi Agnihotri & Dr. Sukhkjit Kaur along with senior faculty Dr. Avinash Rana,  and Ms Gurpreet Kaur, Sister Grade-I & Ph.D Scholar at NINE under Dr. Sandhya Ghai, Principal NINE.

 Impressed & Inspired by the declaration of International Yoga Day, Dr. Sandhya Ghai guided her Ph.D. candidate to conduct study on the topic on "Effectiveness of supportive care intervention (SCI) on selected outcome variables amongst the patients undergoing chemotherapy for malignant lymphoma: A Randomised Controlled Trial". This is the first initiative to do research on effect of yoga in PGI.
