PGI Symposium on Economic Evidence for Policy and Clinical Decision Making

Chandigarh 03rd December:- School of Public Health, Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh is organizing a national symposium on "Using Economic Evidence for Policy and Clinical Decision Making" on 4th December 2015 in Auditorium-1, Advanced Pediatric Centre from 9.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. Prof. Y.K. Chawla, Director, PGIMER Chandigarh will inaugurate the symposium. Several world renowned health economists including Dr.Yot Teerawattananon, Founding Leader of the Thailand's Health Intervention Technology Assessment Program, Prof. Stephen Janfrom Sydney Medical School, Australia and Dr. Abha Mehndiratta who is the India Technical Advisor, of United Kingdom's National Institute of Health and Care Excellence will deliver plenary lectures. Besides national experts from several institutions in India will discuss the issue of use of economic evidence for policy making in health.The objective of the symposium is to sensitize the audience regarding the use of economic evidence for organization of efficient health care and aid in rational decision-making.

This symposium is in continuation with a 4 day workshop on "Economic Evaluation of Health Care Programs and Intervention: Role for Priority Setting in Universal Health Care Package" which has been organized from 30th November to 3rd December 2015. The objective of the workshop is to build knowledge and skills of policy makers, program managers, academicians and researchers regarding how to evaluate the health care interventions and programs from an economic perspective. This workshop has been attended by health care program managers from the states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Haryana and Punjab, besides officers from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Nearly 40 researchers from Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE), National Institute for Research in Tuberculosis, Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Public Health Foundation of India, Indian Institute of Public Health and IIT Chennai attended this workshop. The workshop dealt with various methodological concepts and challenges faced while conducting an economic evaluation in health care. It highlighted the role of economic evaluation to provide rigorous evidence to inform health care decision-making process that whether investing resources in the new intervention is worth the value for money.
