PGI and CRIKC Celebrates Teachers Day

Chandigarh 05th September:- To celebrate Teachers Day as a tribute to the former Presidents of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam and Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, PGI, on behalf of Chandigarh Region Innovation and Knowledge Cluster (CRIKC) institutions today organized a function. PU Vice Chancellor (VC) and Chairperson of CRIKC, Prof Arun Kumar Grover, former PGI Director, Dr KK Talwar, Director PGI Dr. Yogesh Chawla, Dr J.M. Dave from Swaminarayan Akshardham, Dean PGI Dr Savita Malhotra and Heads of CRIKC institutions addressed the function at Bhargava Auditorium of PGIMER, Chandigarh. Large number of students, teachers and researchers from CRIKC institutions participated in the CRIKC Teachers Day celebrations. 

Director PGI, Dr Yogesh Chawla welcomed the guests and while eulogizing Dr Kalam and his love for the youth and science, also shared how Dr Kalam cared for his junior colleagues. He particularly mentioned that Dr Kalam did not like "Yes, Sir" kind of people.

In his address, PU VC Prof Arun Kumar Grover recalled his interactions with Dr Kalam. He informed that Dr Kalam had accepted his invitation to address the Panjab University students on PU foundation day. Dr Kalam was inspired by three great teachers namely Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, Prof Satish Dhawan and Dr Brahm Prakash. Dr Brahm Prakash and Prof Satish Dhawan were PU Alumni, he added. Prof Grover said that Dr Kalam epitomized rare blend of spiritualism, scientific temperament, nationalism and human values.  He made phenomenal contribution to India's missile program, which earned him the nick name of 'Missile Man of India'.

Dr Talwar described Dr Kalam as a great man and great human being. He recalled the Dr Kalam's visit to PGI and his meeting with him. He also recalled various contributions of Dr Kalam in the field of health sciences including the development of a cardiac stent called Kalam-Raju stent which costs just 500 Rs in contrast to the imported stents which cost thousands.

Former MP and Additional Solicitor General of India in the Punjab and Haryana High Court at Chandigarh, Satya Pal Jain told a story of how when Dr Kalam was asked for an auspicious time for filing his nomination as the President of India, Dr Kalam replied that each such moment is auspicious when the earth is rotating around its axis and around the sun.

Dr J.M. Dave from Swaminarayan Akshardham spoke about Dr Kalam's interactions with the temple and described how Dr Kalam got involved with the work the temple was carrying out after the Gujarat earthquake  in 2001.

Director, IISER Mohali, Dr. N. Sathyamurthy; Director, INST Mohali, Prof. A K Ganguli; Director Principal of Government Medical College & Hospital, Sector-32, Chandigarh, Prof. Atul Sachdev; Prof SC Bedi from Rayat Bahra; Associate Director TBRL, Dr Dev Raj Saroha, Head of the Aerospace Engineering Department PEC, Prof Kishori Lal also spoke on the occasion. The speakers recalled the great contributions of Dr Kalam and their memories with Dr Kalam.
