Chandigarh 22nd September:- The Departments of Internal Medicine and Hematology along with The Max Foundation celebrated World CML Day in PGI Bhargava Auditorium today. More than 900 patients and their caregivers attended the meeting. Majority of patients had come from Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Utter Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. Questions related to the disease, medicines, diet, side effects were answered by a team of experts consisting of Prof. S. Varma, N. Varma, Pankaj Malhotra, Dr. Alka, Dr. Shano and Dr. Gaurav along with Dr. Joseph John from CMC Ludhiana. A special clinic was organized by Dept. of Dermatology for examining the skin related problems of these patients. A total of 410 patients were examined by Dr. Sunil Dogra and their team from dept. of dermatology. Patients were also asked about problems faced by them for long term treatment of this disease and various questionnaires were filled up by Dr. Uday and his team. Many patients shared their experiences with the disease and how they are coping up with their illness. Many patients gave inspired talks.
Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) is a type of blood cancer that is now considered curable in majority of patients who present in early stage. The cure of this cancer is possible with the help of medicine called as "Magic Bullet" or Imatinibmesylate. The average life of patient with this type of cancer was only 2-3 years before the advent of this medicine. This cancer is now considered as chronic disease like diabetes and hypertension. Since 2001, PGI, Chandigarh in association with The Max Foundation is providing this medicine free of cost to patients who are non-affording. The number of patients living with this type of cancer and in good state of health has increased tremendously signifying the magic of this medicine.
