German Delegation in City to Encourage Students for Higher Education and Scientific Research

Chandigarh 21st August:- Representatives of leading German universities and research funding organizations interacted with students, academicians, and researchers about various opportunities available to pursue research career in Germany.

Stephan Lanzinger, Counsellor and Head of Science and Technology Section of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany, said that Germany is becoming a favourite destination and in last five years the number of students there has almost doubled to over 10,000. He said that students can chose English as language of study which is available in most universities, and German is no longer a pre-requisite for obtaining visa, besides students can now work while studying as also look for jobs after completion of their studies. There are over 10,000 students pursuing higher education and research in Germany which is known for its innovations and over 80 noble laureates.

Director of German House for Research and Innovation, Dr. Alexander P. Hansen said that many of its 400 universities provide scholarships and research funding for PhD and post-doctoral studies and research internships that make it the most preferred destination for research.

Prof. A.K. Grover, Vice Chancellor Panjab University hoped that the students here would benefit from the information and pursue specialized research work with the universities in Germany.

Anuroopa Dixit, Programme Officer of German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) said that many of the universities charge either no or nominal tuition fee and the students can also sustain themselves by working either 120 full days or 240 halfdays in a year.

The German delegation also organized an alumni meet later in the afternoon with 50 alumni of German universities at the PGI and also called on the Director, and shall be meeting the researchers at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) at Mohali tomorrow.

Delegation led by Science Counsellor of German Embassy Stephan Lanzinger and Director of German House for Research and Innovation Dr. Alexander P. Hansen included representatives from German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Freie Universitat Berlin, University of Cologne, University of Gottingen, Technical University of Munich, German Research Foundation (DFG), Forschungszentrum, Julich, and Heidelberg Centre for South Asia.
