Chandigarh 07th February:- To provide quality clinical and social services in a safe, supportive, and stimulating environment to those elderly disabled adults who cannot remain alone, but do not require 24-hour residential care, The Department has launched a Day Care Centre for Senior Citizens with Disabilities at Asha kiran- Vocational Training centre Sector 46, Chandigarh. The staff at the Center promotes hope and support to the aging and disabled and at the same time, strives to promote wellness, independence, and dignity.
Chandigarh Child and Women Development Corporation (under the aegis of Social Welfare Department, Chandigarh Administration) has set up this centre with an aim of promoting "Ageing With Joy & Dignity", it provides social & emotional support, psychological counseling, recreational activities etc. to senior citizens with disability.
In one of its kind unique initiatives in the country this centre has been set up to provide comprehensive facilities for the older persons – ranging from- diet, nutrition & fitness, recreational area including indoor games, Computer rooms for E -learning with wi-fi facility , Library & reading room with daily newspaper, The centre also provided services of the Yoga therapist and physiotherapist to its members. Healthy body needs to be complemented with a healthier mind and considering this Counseling Services are also available for the elderly members throughout the day. There is also provision of Health Check Up of its members which is done by in house Medical Officer and other staff in dispensary. Further classes for healthy ageing on Meditation, pranayam, yogasanas, lectures are also periodically conducted. The senior citizens enrolled in the centre also are directly linked with the schemes and benefits of the Social welfare department for the welfare and empowerment of senior citizens including Pensions, Loans, Old Age Homes for senior citizen and services of 24x7 Senior Citizen Helpline (181) for emergency support & Psycho social counseling. At present around 50 senior citizens are enrolled in the centre and are availing of the facilities provided by the centre.
