HC declines to interfere in FIR against singer Honey Singh

Chandigarh, 04th July:--The Punjab and Haryana High Court has today declined to interfere in the FIR registered against singer and rapper Honey Singh. HC has left it up to the state governments to decide as to whether some mechanism should be set up for screening vulgar and obscene songs or not. The PIL filed by Nawan Shahar based NGO HELP has sought issuance of appropriate directions to Punjab to examine the feasibility of setting up some effective mechanism for screening vulgar and obscene songs before they are played before public.

Punjabi Singer Honey Singh was personally present before the HC Bench comprising CJ and Justice A.G. Masih for the hearing of the case.  Honey Singh's counsel Dr Anmol Rattan Singh, Senior Advocate stated that "Honey Singh has fallen victim to his own celebrity status." He contended that the controversial song "Main hun Balatkari" has not been sung by him. It appears that some other "Honey Singh" or some other person, impersonating his client, has sung that song. Coming back to the petitioner's plea on setting up some mechanism on song content, HC thereupon disposed the PIL by observing that it was for the state government to decide as to whether it would like to set up some mechanism or Authority, for screening vulgar or obscene songs, and for stopping the misuse of information and technology by uploading such songs on internet etc."It is also for the State Government to decide as to what should be "checks and balances" to be incorporated in such a mechanism," the bench said.

Talking to Media, Honey Singh said, "I am targeted again and again because of my successful status. It is my misfortune that people started liking my songs. It is my misfortune that my music has been a hit throughout the world. It is my misfortune that I have made a muscular body. It is my misfortune that crowds love me. All these things combined are making things tough for me."

He added that even the great Bollywood legendary songs like 'Kabhi Kabhi', 'Jawani Janeman', 'Husn ke lakho rang' and recent songs like 'Ambarsariya' all have double meaning content. "But my songs are always the target. The present day generation uses slang language and so do I. I am representing India at many music festivals throughout the world and have sung in many Indian languages apart from Hindi and Punjabi like Gujarati and Bengali. I thank God that I am out of this controversy and am willing to sing playback for Bollywood."
