Chandigarh, May 29, 2025:--Chandigarh Pradesh Congress Committee President H.S. Lucky has strongly condemned the proposal put forward by the BJP-ruled Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh to increase the rates of community centers across the city, which is expected to be presented in the upcoming meeting. Lucky called this decision anti-people and insensitive, stating that it would directly impact poor and middle-class families who rely on these affordable venues for their social and religious events.
Lucky said that community centers were established with a clear and noble purpose — to provide citizens with accessible and budget-friendly venues for events, especially for those who cannot afford the exorbitant rental costs of private banquet halls or hotels. He said that raising their rates goes against the very spirit with which these centers were created.
These community centers are essential venues for weddings, birthdays, and other family gatherings. More importantly, they are made available free of charge for traditional rituals held after the passing of a loved one. Eliminating these concessions or increasing fees not only places a financial burden on families but also shows deep insensitivity towards grieving families.
Lucky emphasized that the Congress Party stands firmly against such anti-public policies and demands that this proposal be withdrawn immediately. He said that it is the administration's duty to make people's lives easier, not to burden them further — especially during moments of both joy and grief when communities come together.
He also questioned the timing and intent behind this proposal, pointing out that citizens are already under financial stress due to a steep hike in property tax, rising inflation, and unemployment. Imposing additional costs on community services during such times is entirely unjust and condemnable.
Chandigarh Congress appeals to all public representatives and social organizations to unite in opposing this anti-people decision and raise their voices in the interest of the public. If the Municipal Corporation does not withdraw this proposal, the Congress Party will not hesitate to launch a public movement.
