Chandigarh 19th August:-As many as 80 doctors attended a Max Super Speciality Hospital (MSSH), Mohali health seminar on latest advancements in Laparoscopic Surgery at Solan last night. The seminar was organized with IMA, Solan and Solan Doctors Association.

 

Speaking during occasion, Dr Manmohan Singh Bedi, Sr Consultant, Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery, MSSH, Mohali said that recent advancements in laparoscopic surgery with better visual devices, good dissecting instruments have made the surgery bloodless and very safe for patients.

 

Dr Divya Awasthi, Consultant, Laparoscopic Gynaecology Surgery also spoke on 'Advancements in Gynae Laparoscopic Surgery'.

 

Talking about the latest devices in laparoscopic surgery, Dr Bedi said that these devices provided magnified view as high definition image that was even better than naked eye. It also provided an edge over open surgery. In this case, trauma to the body was minimum resulting in less pain and early recovery. 

 

"This has come as major boon for patients residing in far flung areas with minimal medical facilities as least postoperative care were required and hospital stay was also less. In case of open surgery, most patients would have to be in hospital for wound care but in laparoscopic surgery this is not required."

 

Defining it as a boon for cancer patients who required large cuts to take tumor out besides long hospital stay and complications, Dr Bedi informed that with laparoscopic approach wound complications were minimal with less hospital stay. Hence it gave psychological advantage to patient who scared to undergo surgery.  

       

Meanwhile apart from cesarean surgery, almost all the surgeries can be done laparoscopically. Routinely done laparoscopic surgeries are; cholecystectomy, appendicectomy, all gynecological surgeries, all types of hernia surgeries, all types of surgeries for cancer of abdomen, weight reducing surgery and surgery for heartburn.
