Chandigarh 07th July:-PGI, Chandigarh celebrated its 52nd foundation day.Dr K Vijay Raghavan, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India was the chief guest during the Foundation Day celebration. Seven PGI employees were honoured by Dr Raghavan. They were presented appreciation certificates along with mementoes.
While sharing the mantra of scaling quality research in India Padam Shri Dr Raghavan said that we scientists have to fully concentrate on the complex scientific problems to address them. The problems should be looked into, not only from global angle but also locally. Instead of postponing decisions on critical scientific issues, the challenge has to be faced head on by taking quick decisions. Scientific research in India can reach new heights only through national and international collaboration and sharing of resources. Instead of following traditional ways of dealing with problems, mixed innovative solutions are the key to scaling quality research. The culture of solving complex issues has to be inculcated amongst the scientific fraternity so that we don't lag behind.
Prof. Yogesh Chawla, Director PGIMER earlier introduced the chief guest and apprised the audience about the future plans of the Institute. He said that our vision for the future includes coming up with a Screening OPD and Satellite Centre at Sangrur, new Centres like Mother and Child Care, Neurosciences and Cancer Research, translational medical centre and organ retrieval and transplantation centre. We plan to start new courses in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, Trauma Anaesthesia and Toxicology. We wish to start Biomedical Engineering and promote innovation skills to improve patient care and start medical education department to improve course curriculum of different specialties.
While apprising the listeners about the accomplished faculty of PGIMER Prof Chawla said, that this year also the faculty received numerous awards like prestigious Padma Shri for our Dean Dr. Amod Gupta, Indian Council of Medical Research awards, BC Roy Awards, besides orations, president-ships, memberships and fellowships of academic societies. The PGI faculty has also attracted around Rs. 29 crores as extra mural grants for various research projects and has published more than 1100 research articles during the last year. We have also got NABL accreditation for Department of Microbiology, first and largest department in Public Sector. PGI was awarded the India Healthcare Award – 2013 by the Planning Commission of India. Our Advanced Eye Centre has been made Centre of Excellence by the Department of Biotechnology, while the Departments of Pulmonary Medicine and Medical Mycology have been made WHO Collaborating Centres. National Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance centre for Bacteria and Fungi, Centre of Advanced Research in Medical Mycology, Regional Virus Diagnostic Centre, Centre for Evidence Based Medicine and Clinical Trial Training Centres, Centre of Primary Immune Deficiency in Children have all been awarded to the Institute by the Indian Council of Medical Research.
