World Kidney Day: Unhealthy Eating Habits Lead to Kidney Disease: Dr Mukesh Goyal

Chandigarh, Mar.11, 2025:- 2.2 lakh new patients develop chronic kidney failure in our country every year and it is also the 6th fastest growing cause of death, which may change to become the 5th leading cause by 2040. High blood pressure, diabetes, glomerulonephritis, untreated kidney stones and congenital diseases are the main reasons for kidney failure in India.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Dr Sunil Kumar director renal transplant surgery at Park Hospital, Mohali said that we are doing all type of living donor transplants, which include high risk transplants, paediatric transplants swap cases, ABO incompatible transplants (non-blood group specific) & redo transplants. Even patients from far off places like Dehradun, Jammu, Lucknow, Kanpur, Bihar, and Jharkhand are coming to Chandigarh for kidney transplant.
Ashish Chadha group CEO North, Park Hospitals said that we are now North India's biggest super speciality network, with 14 hospitals, 3000 beds, 800 ICU beds, 45 OCT, 14 cath labs and 1000 plus doctors.
Dr Mukesh Goyal consultant nephrology said that chronic kidney failure is progressive in nature and causes irreversible damage to the kidneys mainly because of diabetes, hypertension, infection, urinary obstruction, stone disease and some inherited abnormalities. The prevalence of this disease has almost doubled over the past decade, and is expected to increase further due to rise in risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, stress, and unhealthy eating habits.
Elucidating the benefits of a renal transplant to the patient in the long run Dr. Manay Goyal urologist said every 10 minutes one person is added to the organ transplant waiting list and 20 people die every day for an Organ in India. More than 3 lakh patients are waiting for organ donation, but less than 10 % of the patients waiting for organ donation get it on time.
Dr Swati Gupta consultant anaesthesia said that nationally, with a population of 1.4 billion people, the statistic stands at 0.08 persons as organ donors per million populations (PMP) in India. This is an incredibly small and insignificant number compared to the statistics around the world.
Dr Malvika Tendullkar said India remains 3rd in the world in organ donation after USA & China, but only 0.01 percent of People in India donate organs after death.  Kidneys are the most frequently needed organ followed by Liver.  By donating organs, a deceased donor person can save the lives of up to 8 individuals by way of organ donation and enhance the lives of over 50 people by way of tissue donation.

10 tips to prevent kidney disease:
Ø  Manage diabetes, high blood pressure
Ø  Reduce the intake of salt
Ø  Drink 8- 10 glass of water every day
Ø  Don't resist the urge to urinate
Ø  Eat a balanced Diet including lots of fruit
Ø  Drink healthy beverages
Ø  Avoid alcohol and smoking
Ø  Exercise daily
Ø  Avoid self-medication, especially painkillers
