Renowned Vocalist Dr Malkit Singh Jandiala to Give ‘Raga’ Recital at Tagore Theatre on January 18

 Chandigarh, Jan.15, 2024:- Renowned Hindustani Classical Raga Vocalist Dr Malkit Singh Jandiala is set to mesmerize the audience with his soulful 'raga' recital at Tagore Theatre in Chandigarh on January 18, 6 pm onwards. The performance is being organised by Polo Hindustani Art Heritage and Cultural Trust along with Pracheen Kala Kendra. Details of the unique upcoming performance were given at a press meet held here by Dr Malkit Singh, Amardeep Singh Dahiya, noted author and Founder, Polo Hindustani Art Heritage and Cultural Trust and Sajal Koser, Secretary, Pracheen Kala Kendra.

Dr. Singh, a highly acclaimed Hindustani classical music artist, is celebrated for his mastery over various 'ragas' and his ability to infuse emotions into his performances. It will be a one of a kind performance, a unique presentation of 'ragas' by a talented lawyer-cum-raga vocalist Dr Malkit.

Dr Malkit also a devout Sikh who is carrying forward the legacy of 'ragas', a Hindustani classical genre, with his unwavering commitment, said: "In my performance there will be 'dheema khayal', followed by 'dhrut khayal' and then 'tarana'. Each 'raga' is a unique arrangement of ascending and descending musical notes, providing a specific mood and aesthetic character. 'Ragas' are very powerful; they encapsulate 9 'rasas' like 'gambhir', 'bhakti', 'hasya' etc. These can generate intense 'bhav' or feelings."

 Amardeep Singh Dahiya, Founder, Polo Hindustani Art Heritage and Cultural Trust, said that Dr. Malkit's upcoming recital promises to be captivating as he will take the audience on a melodic journey that transcends boundaries and resonates with the timeless essence of classical music. The objective of the evening is to make youth aware of Indian traditions with a motive to promote the true tradition of Hindustani music among them in order to bring them  into the mainstream and connect them to the rich Indian musical ethos.

Dr Malkit who is an MA and M Phil, in Hindustani Classical Music and a Ph.D. in Gurmat Sangeet, has done intense research on all four 'Vedas'. According to him, "The first account of 'ragas' is documented in 'Sam Veda', which is a 'sangeetak' treatise. So 'ragas' were born 1000's of years ago."

Dr Malkit will sing one 'raga' of Shri Guru Granth Sahib  also. It is to be noted that Dr Malkit introduced Gurmat Sangeet in 1989 by establishing Gurmat Sangeet Society, Chandigarh and is also Honorary Head of Department, Gurmat Sangeet at Pracheen Kala Kendra.

 Sajal Koser, Secretary, Pracheen Kala Kendra, said that music enthusiasts in Chandigarh can anticipate an evening of sublime melodies and artistic brilliance as Dr Malkit Singh graces the Tagore Theatre stage with his musical prowess on the much-anticipated evening of January 18.

Koser further informed that along with the versatile raga singer Dr Malkit Singh, the musical celebration will be graced by national and international artists showcasing their expertise in Tabla, Guitar, Sarangee, and Harmonium. Ustad Akram Khan of Ajrada Gharana will be on Tabla, Sumit Mishra from Banaras shall enthral on harmonium, Murad Ali Khan, grandson of the wonderful Moradabad Sarangiya Siddiqui Ahmed Khan, shall be on Sarangee.

 Dahiya said that the Chief Guest will be Justice Sh. Vinod S Bhardwaj, Judge, Punjab and Haryana High Court and that Sardar Charan Singh Sapra, Former Trustee of Hazur Sahib will release a book on Gurmat Sangeet penned by Dr Malkit Singh - 'Aadi  Granth Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ka Raag Prabandh' in both Sanskrit and Hindi. Lifetime Achievement Awards will be presented to distinguished personalities.
