Chandigarh Oct. 28, 2021:- The NSS units of Mehr Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Chandigarh organised a one-day special campaign against Single-Use Plastic in the adopted village Badheri, Chandigarh. During the campaign, the NSS volunteers collected single-use plastic waste and sensitised the residents about the harmful effects of such plastic on humans and the environment. NSS discussed the objectives and goals of the Clean India programme and urged the volunteers to make their surroundings plastic free. A massive cleanliness drive was also organised wherein the volunteers cleaned public parks, streets and undertook visits to Anganwadi complex, residential and market areas, collecting more than 60 kgs of single use plastic waste. The volunteers also organised an awareness rally on Single Use Plastic Ban wherein they urged people to adopt alternatives for plastic such as newspaper bags in their daily routine. They also enlightened residents about the rules and strategies which the Government of India is adopting to curb plastic menace. The waste thus collected was handed over to the officials from Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner office for proper disposal. A nukkad natak was also performed by the NSS volunteers to make residents aware about the need to maintain a clean environment. The campaign was carried out by following appropriate COVID-19 protocols.
Principal Dr. Nisha Bhargava asserted that it is well known that plastic takes thousands of years to decompose, adversely affecting humans, flora and fauna, and this, it is important to raise awareness about this menace. She lauded MCM NSS units for working consistently for creating clean and green India.
