Chandigarh April 20, 2021:- The unique book entitled "Acid Attacks on Women: A Socio-Legal Perspective" written by Dr. Navpreet Kaur, a Chandigarh based Advocate and Co-founder of The Laxmi Foundation, an NGO dedicated to the support of acid attack survivors, was launched on April 17,2021 at Press Club, Chandigarh. The book contextualizes acid violence within a framework that measures gender-based inequality. This book makes an essential contribution to the understanding of the issues, in confronting the problems being faced by acid attack victims and in increasing an awareness of its various impacts throughout society. While focusing predominantly on the Indian perspectives on acid attacks, the author also outlines a comparative approach that highlights the contexts, laws, policies, and interventions regarding acid attacks in various other countries. Laxmi Agarwal , Acid Attack Survivor was the chief guest and launched the book.
While pursuing research on acid attacks, Dr. Navpreet Kaur met many acid attack victims and realized the significant psychological, social, medical and legal issues faced by these women and the often inadequate help that they were receiving from Government and other agencies. To address these deficiencies she along with acid attack survivor Laxmi began a campaign called "Stop Sale Acid" against the unrestricted sale of acid and also to help acid attack survivors in their rehabilitation. The campaign has global support. In 2019, Dr. Navpreet and Laxmi Agarwal began an NGO named The Laxmi Foundation. The Foundation works closely with acid attack survivors, underprivileged women and children, and various other vulnerable sections of society.
Laxmi said that she met Dr. Navpreet Kaur in 2016 at that time she was doing research on acid attack violence. She has seen that passion in her while doing her work and research. During her research she visited every center and met each and every family to understand the suffering they have undergone, which she believes is a big thing. She has seen many researchers but her way of doing research was very different. Being a researcher and doing research are two different things. The hard work she has done will be visible in her book. She would like to say this book is not just a book, it's our voice. In this book you will get to know many things which you all have not been aware of. Through her hard work she has explained each and every suffering of acid attack survivors like us. It's an honor that she has explained our experiences and suffering with such purity. She is happy to add that she is a good social worker, great adviser, excellent speaker and an inspiration for the youth.
Dr. Rattan Singh , professor UILS Panjab University, Dr. Jai Mala associate professor UILS Panjab University, Dr. Adarsh Kohli Professor Department of Psychiatry PGI , Prof Baldev Singh DPRO (R) were also present during the book launch.
