Chandigarh 13th Aug:- Bhavan Vidyalaya, Chandigarh organised the first round of Interschool English Debate Competition to commemorate the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi this year.
Twenty-two contestants from various schools debated on two topics: Ahimsa Paramo Dharma- non-violence is the greatest virtue, and Gandhiji's ideology of universal development has lost its meaning.
Contestants put forth relevant arguments for and against the topics followed by a rebuttal round where the audience and other participants questioned the speaker. Contestants were judged on the basis of content and thematic relevance, pronunciation and diction, confidence and rebuttals.
An eminent judging panel consisting of Dr Ashu Pasricha, Chairperson, Department of Gandhian and Peace Studies, Punjab University, Ms. Jagmeeta Thind Joy, accomplished journalist and freelance writer and Ms. Praveen Sharda, HOD, University School of Open Learning added colour to the event.
They shared their valuable insights on the topic with the participants and congratulated the speakers on their fiery arguments.
The final round of the event is to be held on the 17th of August where 12 selected finalists shall debate on whether Gandhian Principles are still relevant in contemporary society.
