By 121 News

SAS Nagar 25th July:- The first step was to encourage and train community members to segregate their waste into different categories such as dry and wet, the District Administration today launched pilot project with distribution and putting in place Green and Blue dust bins in entire District Administrative Complex (DAC) Sector 76.

On this occasion the Deputy Commissioner Girish Dayalan said that green dustbins hold refused eatables, biodegradable matter and the blue one hold non-biodegradable matter. The biodegradable content from the green dustbin has been collected into a pit especially constructed for it. The contents of blue dustbins (which have non-biodegradable garbage) are taken segregated into recyclable and non-recyclable categories. The recyclable content is sold off to junk dealers, while non-recyclable waste is discarded away.

Aim at streamlining the solid waste management system in city, the Deputy Commissioner said that the project has initially been started in DAC but will further elaborate in other parts of the city. He added that we will also carrying out appreciation activities for residents who are carrying out not just segregation of waste but also re-cycling it.

Girish Dayalan further said that we have been going door-to-door, asking people to segregate the dry and wet waste. Also, a positive approach is taken while educating people about the concept of solid waste management as it needs a holistic support to become a success. Sometimes, we even teach people to use kitchen waste for composting. He said that it is a great initiative that only requires a minor change of lifestyle for us. We use our kitchen waste for composting in our garden and it also ensures that the piles of garbage we see in every nook and corner of road disappear.
